Digital payments for financial inclusion of vulnerable groups in Argentina: an empirical study in neighborhood Padre Carlos Múgica (ex Villa 31-31 bis) of the Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires
Económica; vol. 66
This paper addresses the problem of digital payments and financial inclusion in informal settlement merchants. To this end, an unprecedented quantitative survey was developed and 104 merchants from the Padre Carlos Múgica Neighborhood (ex Villa 31 and 31 bis) in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, were interviewed. Our findings claim the enormous potential to include financially through digital payments. Mobile is highlighted as the main sources of access to the digital world, but also highlight the lack of security and trust in this technology. Our result shows a multiplier effect on businesses that accept digital payments in relation to other dimensions of financial inclusion and provides information on what are the main incentives that low-income merchants receive to adopt or be interested in starting to accept digital payments in their businesses.

I analyze the sluggish response of exports during and after financial crises using firm level data for two countries-episodes: Argentina 2001 and Peru 1998 crises. I find that both incumbent exporting firms do not expand and that there’s no significant entry of new exporting firms. Furthermore, I present evidence that suggests that the export elasticity to the real exchange rate is asymmetric, smaller for depreciations than for appreciations. I build and estimate a DSGE model for a small open economy where exporting entrepreneurs are subject to financial frictions and balance sheet effects in order to try and explain these stylized facts. Although these frictions decrease the response of exports to movements in the exchange rate, I use computational exercises to show that they are not enough to explain the empirical results.; Analizo la lenta expansión de las exportaciones durante y después de crisis financieras utilizando datos a nivel firma para dos países-episodios: Argentina 2001 y Perú 1998.

Asymmetries in the feasibility of working from home: estimates and implications in times of quarantine
Económica; vol. 66; http://sedici.unlp.edu.ar/handle/10915/121681
Occupations less compatible with telework are characterized by a higher proportion of informal and self-employed workers, with lower levels of education, skills and wages. Using a simple income simulation, we estimate that the short-term negative effects of measures of mandatory isolation are greater in the lower-income strata, which implies a significant increase in poverty and income inequality.

Linkages, complexity and innovative performance in Argentina

This paper explores the impact of the links or interactions by different goals (R&D, industrial design and engineering, training, among others) on the innovative performance of industrial firms in Argentina. The links are grouped according to their degree of complexity. Statistically significant differences are identified in innovative performance in favour of firms that participate in both more complex and less complex interactions. However, these gaps are explained by the features of the firms. The links by goals have a restricted impact on innovation performance.

News and exchange rate pressures in Argentina
Económica; vol. 66
We study the association between the nominal exchange rate and the dissemination of macroeconomic news in Argentina through the estimation of a VARX-GARCH(1,1) model. Our main empirical results show that: 1) The transmission of adverse financial shocks occurs mostly from the United States and operates via the spread of interest rates (EMBI+ for Argentina); 2) The news compiled from local and foreign newspapers do not generate relevant economic effects to explain the dynamics of the nominal exchange rate; and 3) The conditional volatility of shocks associated with the endogenous variables of the VARX model can be formalized through a GARCH(1,1) specification.

Estimating the effects of Venezuelan immigration in Colombia through a general computed equilibrium model
Económica; vol. 66
Estos resultados son consistentes con la evidencia previa y permiten obtener intuiciones básicas y órdenes de magnitud de los efectos.; A Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model is used to analyze the effects of the massive Venezuelan immigration in Colombia in recent years. Through simulations, different scenarios associated with the migratory shock are compared, including policy interventions and international aid. It is found that, despite the fall in real wages and the increase in unemployment, migration tends to increase levels of income, activity and welfare. These results are consistent with previous evidence and allow obtaining basic insights and orders of magnitude of the effects.
