The Superfamily Diplostomoidea is a major lineage of digenean trematodes characterized by the presence of a ventral holdfast organ. Its members parasitize the intestines of tetrapod vertebrates worldwide, with only a single genus reported from fishes and none from amphibians. During a biodiversity survey in the Brazilian Amazon (Pará State), we discovered highly unusual diplostomoidean digeneans lacking a holdfast organ in the fully aquatic anuran Pipa pipa (Pipidae). We describe these digeneans as a new species and genus Pipatrema mirabilis n. sp., n. g. Additionally, a single specimen of the same genus was found in P. pipa from Amapá State, Brazil and a single specimen belonging to a related genus and species was collected from the South American catfish Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) in Argentina. The molecular phylogeny based on the 28S rRNA gene revealed a secondary loss of the holdfast organ, a defining morphological feature of diplostomoideans. Furthermore, the phylogenetic analysis positioned both taxa lacking a holdfast organ within the proterodiplostome clade among digeneans parasitic in South American crocodilians. These results strongly suggest that parasitism in fish and amphibians is the result of secondary evolutionary host-switching events. This study provides the first record of adult diplostomid trematodes from amphibian and fish hosts. Our findings highlight the importance of integrative approaches combining morphology, molecular phylogenetics, and ecological context to understand parasite diversification and host-parasite evolution in complex aquatic systems.

We describe Echinodorus nenufar, a new species from ephemeral aquatic environments in the dry Chaco region of northern Argentina and western Paraguay. This species is readily distinguished by its unique floral coloration—pale yellow to creamy white pet- als with a basal yellow blotch—and its floating leaf blades, which are broadly cordate to suborbicular, evoking the morphology of waterlilies (Nymphaeaceae). The species exhibits exceptional phenotypic plasticity, producing linear, ovate, or rounded leaves depending on its developmental stage and hydrological context. It completes its life cycle in temporary ponds and seasonal wetlands, where multiple life stages may co- exist simultaneously. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear (ITS, LEAFY) and plastid (rpl22–rps19) markers confirm the distinctiveness of E. nenufar within the E. grandiflorus complex. We also introduce a novel protocol for preserving delicate aquatic plant structures for herbarium curation. Due to its aesthetic appeal, adaptability, and ease of cultivation, E. nenufar might become a valuable ornamental species.

Background: Potentially arthropod-pathogenic and plant-associated Metarhizium fungi are of high interest for basic research, biological pest control and plant growth promotion. Unambiguous species delineation enabling the taxonomic assignment of new isolates and the identification of new Metarhizium species is of crucial importance for both research and application. Recently, the new species Metarhizium hybridum and Metarhizium parapingshaense were introduced on the basis of phylogenomic studies. (2) Methods: Neighbor- joining and Bayesian inference-based phylogenetic reconstruction of ribosomal intergenic spacer (rIGS) sequences were used to critically evaluate new species introductions. A species-discriminating diagnostic PCR tool for Metarhizium was adapted to M. hybridum and M. parapingshaense. GenBank database mining was performed to identify cryptic descriptions of the new species. (3) Results: The introduction of M. hybridum and M. parapingshaense was corroborated by rIGS sequence comparison. Data mining revealed cryptic first descriptions of M. hybridum from Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, New Zealand, the USA and the Philippines, and of M. parapingshaense from China, India, Japan, the Philippines and South Korea. (4) Conclusions: Results support the reliability of rIGS as a single taxonomic marker for species-level identification of Metarhizium fungi. Species-discriminating diagnostic PCR was successfully adapted to enable the sequencing-independent identification of the confirmed new species M. hybridum and M. parapingshaense.

El número óptimo de muestras varió ampliamente (970-10) en función del nivel de precisión y densidad promedio de larvas.; Rachiplusia nu is a pest of crops and it is also found on natural vegetation in Argentina. The study was carried out in double cropping soybean experimental plots, at two sites during different years. By means of weekly samplings, from one month after sowing through leaf senescence, we recorded the number of R. nu larvae. We determined their spatial pattern by means of the variance/mean ratio and Taylor and Iwao regression methods. Dispersion tended to become more random at lower densities and aggregation was apparent only at higher densities. Both regression methods detected clumping when the whole range of larval mean density was considered. Optimal number of sample units varied (970-10) according to precision levels and larval mean densities.

In the northeast of the Buenos Aires province, parasitism by Trichopoda giacomellii is one of the most important mortality factors for N. viridula. Different relative densities and difterent susceptibility to parasitism among hosts, and a clumped .spatial distribution of hosts and/or parasitoids are mechanisms that could account for the observed persistence and stability of the system, since they would generate a skewed distribution of attacks among hosts. In order to analyze the distribution of attacks among hosts as a function of both mechanisms this work studied (1) the proportion of parasitoid eggs stuck on hosts with different susceptibility to parasitism (grouped as nymphs, adult females, adult males) and (2) the distribution of eggs among hosts of each group. In the first case, the results showed that a greater proportion of attacks were concentrated on adults, rather than other developmental stages, and moles rather than females. In the second case, showed that the distribution of the number of eggs/host fitted a negative binomial distribution. The aggregative parameter k was ¡n general < 1, indicating that while the majority oj’hosts were not parasitized, only a small number was attacked 8 or more turres. The relationship between k and host density also suggest that the attacks tend to be more randomly distributed when host density increases. Despite the intense parasitism by Tricopoda giacomellii, both mechanisms will produce a well skewed distribution of attacks among hosts acting as a partial refuge for hosts with a lesser preference by the parasitoid or those located in patches of low density. In this way, these hosts would be attacked sufficiently late as to oviposit at least once, this would explain the persistence of the system.

In this way, these hosts would be attacked sufficiently late as to oviposit at least once, this would explain the persistence of the system.</dc:description>

Evidence of intraspecific competition in early instars of the tomato moth, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)
Ecología Austral; vol. 12, no. 2
Although larvae initiate new mines when they molt to the third instar, their density during the sedentary early instars may be critical for larval survival, developmental time and pupal weight. The objective of this study was to explore whether both the density of eggs and the leaf area influence intraspecific competition among early larval instars of this species in terms of larval survival, developmental time and weight of pupae. Increasing densities of eggs were negatively correlated with larval survival. The weight of pupae was positively related with fecundity and decreased with egg density. Increasing within-leaf egg density had a positive but weak effect on developmental time. About 39% of the variation in egg number was explained by leaf area, thus other factors might be influencing the selection sites for oviposition. Larval survival was negatively but weakly related with leaf area. This variable did not explain neither pupal weight nor developmental time.

8, no. 1
The effect of maize foliar pubescence on the oviposition of D. saccharalis and egg parasitism by T. exiguum was assessed. Sixty-eight maize cultivars were classified by hair density on the upper leaf face into “high pubescent “ (HP) and “low pubescent” (LP) classes. No differences in total egg masses/ plant and total eggs/plant were found between HP and LP cultivars. More egg masses/plant and eggs/ plant were found in the lower face of leaves of HP cultivars, but no differences were found between leaf faces in LP cultivars. The percentages of parasitised egg masses and eggs were higher on LP cultivars, and the egg masses and eggs on the lower leaf face showed a higher level of parasitism than the ones on the upper face. The results suggest the advantage of incorporating low hair density as a trait for the development of resistant maize cultivars, since this character would increase the oviposition activity of T. exiguum.

33, no. 2
Mosquitoes (Diptera, Culicidae) are a very diverse taxonomic group, which mainly inhabits tropical-subtropical zones, with many species of public health significance considered vectors of different pathogens, such as the yellow fever virus (YFV) (Flavivirus, Flaviviridae). Our aim is to know the diversity of mosquito species in the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest and determine the presence of vector of YFV. The study was carried out in April and November 2021 in three Provincial Parks: Piñalito, Cruce Caballero and Moconá. We used CDC-light traps and net/manual aspirator as collection techniques. Overall, across the three sites we collected 536 female adult mosquitoes and identified 13 genera and 33 species. Considering all study sites, we obtained a high Margalef diversity index (DMG=5.8). Considering all study sites together, the species with the highest relative abundance (RA) were Haemagogus leucocelaenus (Dyar and Shannon) (RA=15.3%, N=37) and Psorophora ferox (von Humboldt) (RA=16.1%, N=39). In relation to species involved in the sylvatic YF cycle, we collected Hg. leucocelaenus (a main vectors) in the three study areas and nine other species considered potential vectors (7 species in Piñalito, 5 in Cruce Caballero and 2 in Moconá). Although all of the species we found have been previously reported in Misiones, none had been documented in the studied areas; so, we expanded the distribution of all of them. We found a high diversity of species reported for Misiones (33 of 194 species), which could be related to the variety of habitats present in this portion of the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest.

<dc:description>Mosquitoes (Diptera, Culicidae) are a very diverse taxonomic group, which mainly inhabits tropical-subtropical zones, with many species of public health significance considered vectors of different pathogens, such as the yellow fever virus (YFV) (Flavivirus, Flaviviridae). In addition, many of these species are of sanitary importance, which makes these areas of special interest for developing plans to monitor insects and their associated viruses.

Parasitized adult hosts, Nezara viridula (L.), were collected during November 1986 - February 1987 in the experimental field of the Faculty of Agronomy of La Plata, and kept in captivity until death. Every host (n= 660) was then dissected, and the initial number of larvae/ host computed. The mean number of parasitoids/host that reached adult stage and the mean pupal length were calculated. The maximum number of adult parasitoid/host was 2 (4.02 % of all cases) while 1 adult parasitoid/host was found in 66.04% of hosts. No pupae was obtained from the remaining hosts. Regression analysis indicated that an increase in the initial larval density from 1 to 20, caused a reduction in survivorship of about 45%. These results suggest a contest-like larval competition, where a mean number of 0. 762 survivors/host and a mean pupal length of 8.25 mm were obtained independently of the initial number of larvae/host. Furthermore, observations of lacerated small larvae and dead larvae at or near the point of entrance into the host without signs of attack, suggest cannibalism and/or allelopathy as mechanisms used by dominant larvae to eliminate competitors.

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effect of soybean leaf age on larval and adult performance of Rachiplusia nu (Guenée) reared on leaves of December (vegetative stage) and February (reproductive stage). The following variables were measured: leaf water content, nutritional indices of last instar larvae (growth and consumption rates, gross and net efficiency of conversion of food in biomass, approximate digestibility), duration of larval stage and pupal weight. Fecundity, oviposition rate, life span of adult females, preoviposition and ovipositors periods, were measured for two groups of females fed with soybean leaves of December and February, through their larval .stage. Leaf water content was significantly higher in December than in February, and this would partially explain the decrease in food quality throughout the crop season. R. nu larvae had á faster growth, higher efficiency of conversion of food in biomass, a shorter larval period, and a higher pupal weight when individuals were fed with leaves of December. No significant difference was found in the fecundity of the adults but oviposition rate was higher in december. These results show that food quality and its effect on herbivore performance should be taken into account regarding pest control strategies.

Resource utilization and larval survival of the bud borer, Crocidosema aporema (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in soybean (Glycine max)
Ecología Austral; vol. 11, no. 2
Larvae feed on vegetative and floral buds, and since more than one larva is usually found in a bud, the number of larvae per bud can affect available resources. The objective of this work was to evaluate larval performance according to the larval density per bud, the development strategy of a larvae that arrives to an already occupied bud, and adult ovipositional strategy. We analyzed the maximum densities of eggs and larvae, their spatial distribution, the amount of resources needed for larvae development, and the effect of increasing larval density on dispersal and survivorship. Soybean during V5 phenological stage showed 76.7% of the plants with eggs, and 27% with larvae. Soybean during V9 stage (2.5 eggs per plant and 5 buds per plant) had 74.3% of the plants with eggs, and 46% of the plants with larvae. We found an aggregate spatial distribution in all cases. Results suggest that adults avoid high densities of eggs or larvae per bud during the oviposition. Consumption during the last two larval instars represents 95.7% of total larval consumption. We infested soybean plants with one to four first instar larvae per bud (T1, T2, T3, and T4 treatments, respectively) in a field experiment. Larval survival showed significant differences between T1 and T4. Initial density affected the proportion of larvae that left the bud in the fourth instar looking for other buds. Mean maximum distance run by larvae increased with the initial number of larvae per bud. The number of consumed organs per plant also increased with a higher number of larvae per bud; however, the ratio between mean total of consumed organs and mean surviving larvae was not significantly different from the mean. A first instar larva that colonizes an occupied bud can either remain or search for a new one. If it remains, survival will change with number of larvae; if it searches for another unoccupied bud, survival will be the product between survival of T1 and the probability of colonize it, which means a lower value. These values would be even lower in the field, due to the occurrence of diverse predators, therefore being advantageous for a first instar larva to remain in the same bud, even if it is already occupied.

Monotypic forests of Gonopterodendron sarmientoi: environment, genetics, and morphology of palosantales
Ecología Austral; vol. 32, no. 2
Due to habitat destruction and high exploitation, G. sarmientoi is threatened; hence, baseline information about the forests where the species grows is needed to guide future management and conservation programs. The objective of this article is to characterize the environment, genetic diversity and morphology of G. sarmientoi’s palosantales (n=10), in relation to the species’ mixed forests (n=14). For that, along the whole range of the species distribution, we compared the palosantales and mixed forests regarding their composition of plant species and site attributes (soil type and vegetation index), genetic diversity obtained with neutral markers, and leaf and tree morphological traits. The palosantales were characterized by having fewer companion species forests (mean 8; min. 1; max. 14), predominantly with shrub species, in relation to mixed forests (mean 10; min. 8; max. 13). The soils of the palosantales showed high content of clay and low levels of organic carbon and sand. The lowest nutrients sampled sites were palosantales located in the center-west of the species range, in the triple border Argentina-Bolivia-Paraguay, and in the palosantales on Bermejo river paleochannels (Argentina). The vegetation index confirmed the low productivity of palosantales forests (NDVI palosantales 0.38; NDVI mixed forests 0.51). The palosantales were similar in genetic diversity with respect to mixed forest (nucleotide diversity 0.00103 vs. 0.00120; Shannon index 0.89 vs. 1.02, respectively). Morphologically, G. sarmientoi trees in the palosantales were shorter and shrubbier than the mixed forest trees. The forests of G. sarmientoi require focused research that considers the singularities of each type of forest, allowing conservation of the species and the derived ecosystem services.

Gonopterodendron sarmientoi is a native tree species from Chaco region forest that grows in mixed forest or in pure dense forests (palosantales).
33, no. 3
Lichens represent a complex life form characterized by a symbiotic partnership between at least two organisms: a fungus and an alga. In this unique relationship, the fungus offers a protective habitat for the alga, which, in turn, harnesses energy from sunshine, water and air to provide sustenance for the fungus. They fulfill ecological roles as a food source for many invertebrates and serve as the basal trophic level for a variety of animals, being considered micro-ecosystems which can host a rich and diverse biota. Nematodes are among the most widespread and abundant of all metazoans, inhabit moist interstitial environments in all habitats and are abundant in marine and freshwater benthic habitats and in the soil. They were also reported from accumulations of detritus in leaf axils, in the angles of tree branches and in mosses and lichens. In this case study, the trophic role and diversity of free-living nematodes associated with lichens were examined in an area of Buenos Aires province, Argentina, revealing seven genera of nematodes linked to Heterodermia diademata, representing all trophic levels of free-living nematodes: bacteriophages (Plectus and Acrobeles), fungivores (Aphelenchus), herbivores (Helicotylenchus), omnivores (Eudorylaimus and Mesodorylaimus) and a predator (Prionchulus).; Los líquenes representan una forma de vida compleja caracterizada por una asociación simbiótica entre al menos dos organismos: un hongo y un alga.

34, no. 2
Due to several epizootic events between 2020 and 2021 in the south of Brazil near the border with Argentina, we performed mosquito surveys in areas of epidemiological risk in northeast Argentina to evaluate abundance and distributions of mosquito vectors from the yellow fever virus (YFV) (Diptera: Culicidae). For the most abundant species, the number of individuals captured per collector was evaluated based on the capturing time range. With a total sampling effort of 191 collector-hours, we captured 676 mosquitoes belonging to 6 genera and 16 species. The most abundant species were Aedes (Ochlerotatus) scapularis (Rondani) (33.58%), Sabethes (Sabethes) albiprivus Theobald (20.27%), Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse) (17.75%) and Haemagogus (Conopostegus) leucocelaenus (Dyar and Shannon) (15.86%). Sabethes albiprivus and Ae. albopictus showed activity peaks at noon and morning, respectively, while other species showed no important time differences between 10:00AM and 15:00PM. Our results show that the most abundant mosquito species in those environments with epidemiological risk in northern Corrientes and southern Misiones are categorized as important in the transmission of the YFV.

Entomophagy is often considered as an alternative and complementary practice in human food security. Recently, the exploration of edible insects has taken an increased focus on traditional practices, thus highlighting the importance of inherent folklore in the search of protein-rich food alternatives and their biofunctional properties. The present work summarizes edible insect species in Latin America, some of which are well known and commercialized species. However, most of these Latin-American species are directly extracted from the ecosystem, thereby entailing a complex interaction between sociocultural practices, biodiversity, and food requirements. Latin America possesses an extensive culture concerning the use and consumption of insect species. Therefore, previous experience regarding the mass production and commercialization of said species, along with their utilization as sustenance, constitute a sound reference frame in the exploration of wild or less consumed species, thence improving food security resources.
