Pterocarya stenoptera (Juglandaceae), a new exotic species in the Celtis tala forests in a protected natural area of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina)
Bonplandia; vol. 32, no. 1
The Celtis tala forests, or talares of Buenos Aires province (Argentina), are a fragile ecosystem threatened by biological invasions. Among the alien species reported as transforming the landscape in the talares, Ligustrum lucidum constitutes the main threat. This work evaluates the degree of naturalization of the alien Pterocarya stenoptera (Juglandaceae), new in the talares of the El Destino Private Reserve, located within the Parque Costero del Sur Biosphere Reserve. The local use of the species, its possible origin and type of dispersion were evaluated, and its extension and number of seedlings per square meter were recorded in the invaded sectors. The species is described, and a dichotomous key is provided to differentiate the Juglandaceae genera present in Buenos Aires, all of which are exotic. Pterocarya stenoptera may have been cultivated in the gardens of Estancia El Destino, from where it spread to the neighbouring talares by anemochory. It was found in three well-defined sectors in which there is a large number of seedlings. This recently naturalized species has efficient means of dispersal and a large seed biomass that enabled it to become a dominant tree in some sectors of the site, where it surpassed the invasive (transformer) Ligustrum lucidum in terms of number of seedlings. The presence of Pterocarya stenoptera in the talares is expected to increase unless management of the species is planned. We conclude that it is necessary and possible to plan actions for its management and control.

Methodological strategies to access the biocultural diversity in periurban homegardens of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Bonplandia; vol. 30, no. 1
The study of homegardens is an important subject in ethnobotany, as they are the expression of local botanical knowledge, and preserve significant biocultural diversity. This diversity is the result of the vital experience of horticulturalists, but it frequently remains hidden when usual ethnobotanical qualitative methodological strategies are applied. In this contribution, a biographical approach is used for the first time in the La Plata horticultural belt (Buenos Aires, Argentina), which is pluricultural and diverse in forms of production, to evaluate its usefulness for knowing the biocultural diversity of the area. When results are compared with those obtained by synchronous observation and interview techniques, a similar number of taxa was identified, with an increase of the total number of plants recognized and used in the area. It was observed that previous experience acquired in other regions enabled the use of certain plants, not habitual in the area. Both advantages and disadvantages of the biographical approach, as well as the contribution of this kind of studies in projects of local development are discussed. It is concluded that the integration of both synchronical methodologies with biographical studies derives in an integral and complex approach to biocultural diversity, not able to be achieved by a single methological way.

In this paper, an interdisciplinary investigation was carried out to study if Santa Maria tricolor style vessels were used as culinary equipment in a 14th century ad domestic cooking space in El Colorado (Yocavil valley, Catamarca, Northwest Argentina) and to question the long-established idea that Santa Maria vessels were exclusively funerary objects. The combined use of gas chromatography (GC-FID), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-Q-TOF) to study residual lipids from Santa Maria style vessels provided valuable information on their ancient use. Also, an ordinary striated style ceramic pot with distinct visible soot marks, as well as sediments from the cooking area, was studied for comparative purposes. Fatty acid, sterol, and acylglyceride profiles were characterized, and markers of food sources were searched in the complex mixtures. We identified intact triacylglycerides (TAGs) in the archaeological samples, even unsaturated, indicating exceptional preservation of lipids in the ceramic matrixes. Cholesterol or cholesterol oxidation products were observed in all ceramic containers, as well as plant sterols (stigmasterol, sitosterol) in two containers. Markers for ruminant lipids, such as TAGs that contain odd-chain fatty acids, were found, supported by the identification of odd-chain and branched-chain fatty acids with GC-FID and GC-MS. This evidence contributes to the hypothesis that Santa Maria vessels were used for culinary purposes in this archaeological domestic cooking space.

Two thousand years of history of the Bonaerense coastal stated by the tala. Inerdisciplinary approach of Celtis ehrenbergiana (Klotzsch) Liebm. as a biocultural heritage trought time in Buenos Aires littoral (Argentina)
VI Congreso Internacional de Etnobotánica (ICEB 2014) (Córdoba, España, noviembre de 2014); Huellas inéditas del VI Congreso Internacional de Etnobotánica
Celtis ehrenbergiana (Klotzsch) Liebm. Because of its ecological importance, through different disciplines it has been approached its meaning for the people who lived and still live around the talar in the Biosphere Reserve “Parque Costero del Sur” (PCS). Archaeological research identified huntergatherer- fishers occupations from about 1800 years BP. The palynological studies indicate that the talar developed in the area later than 3000 years BP. The archaeobotanical analysis identified the use of the tala by local populations through starches and sclereids found in archaeological material (ceramic pots, mortars and pestles). Historical ethnobotany evidence an intensive use of this species since the beginning of the Spanish occupation in Buenos Aires coast, which has caused a severe impact on the forest. At present, ethnobotanical studies in the PCS confirm that the tala is a resource currently used as fuel, for food and even for the manufacture of liquor, a typical product of the area. This interdisciplinary approach allowed identifying the tala as a biocultural heritage of the PCS over time and having identity meaning for local people.

For the first time, a volumetric study of Buenos Aires city atmosphere was conducted using a Lanzoni collector from March 1997 through March 1998. Fifty-four pollen types were recorded of which 13 had a relative concentration of more than 1% of the yearly total. The lowest concentration of pollen grains was recorded in June, when Urtica spp., Morus spp., and Myrtaceae were low. On the other hand, the highest concentration of pollen grains was reached in September, with an increase in Fraxinus spp. The aeropalynological record may be divided into three periods: ∗AP Dominant from July to October, ∗NAP Dominant from November to March, and ∗Residual Period from April to June with low pollen concentrations. The greatest number of species was recorded in November, when 32 types were present, and the lowest number of species in June, when only 13 pollen types were recorded. In June, the pollen concentration was not dominated by any species whereas in September 85% of the pollen was derived from one species of Fraxinus. Earlier studies on the aeropalynology of Buenos Aires City were performed using Tauber and Rotorod samplers. They were comparable to this study, especially since the pollen peak was reached in September, although the main pollen producing species were different.

Economic Botany; vol. 53, no. 2
Two mummified bodies have been recovered from the Alero I or La Matanza site (15 km from Cusi-Cusi, Dpto. Santa Catalina, Puna of Jujuy, Argentina) in association with characteristic snuffing paraphernalia. The purpose of this work is to identify the powdered material contained in one of the tubes in order to confirm the hypothesis generated from ethnographical sources, that the rape (snuff) complex was associated with the consumption of Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil, Fabaceae, the cebil, or, if not, which materials were inhaled. Following analysis with a light microscope, petrographic microscope and scanning electron microscope the unknown material was identified as cebil by comparison with reference material and specialized literature.; En 1991 se recuperaron dos cuerpos momificados en el Alero I La Matanza (distante 15 km de CusiCusi, Dpto.

Multidisciplinary studies in <i>Cucurbita maxima</i> (squash) domesticationMartínez, Analía Beatriz LujánLema, Verónica SoledadCapparelli, AylénBartoli, Carlos GuillermoLópez Anido, FernandoPérez, Sergio Ivánhttp://sedici.unlp.edu.ar:80/handle/10915/1386402022-06-30T20:05:38Z2017-09-16T00:00:00ZArticulo
Vegetation History and Archaeobotany; vol. 27, no. 1
Plant domestication is a complex process in which natural and cultural factors play important roles delimiting evolutionary pathways of plants under cultivation. In order to deal with and understand the changes generated during this process, multi-disciplinary research is required, especially when a full picture of the domestication history of a taxon is to be assessed. We present here some advances in the study of Cucurbita maxima (squash) domestication from an integrated perspective, including experimental, morphometric and archaeobotanical approaches, which are discussed in the light of new data from physiological analyses. Modern material includes plants obtained from experimental fields, derived from crosses between domesticated (C. maxima ssp. maxima) and spontaneous/wild forms (C. maxima ssp. andreana), resulting in F1 and F2 generations. The archaeobotanical material includes remains recovered from sites in southern Peru and northwest Argentina ranging in date from 3,000 to 800 bp. Morphological and anatomical analyses were conducted on seeds, pericarps and peduncles (the stem of the flower or fruit) for reconstructing squash size and shape evolution under domestication. The results suggest the presence of hybrid forms, mainly from the earlier sites, but also from more recent ones. As expected, a linear evolutionary pathway was not found. Diversity and multiple crossings seem to have been a constant in squash cultivation over time, emphasising the role of gene flows between domestic and wild variants in the domestication process. Finally, we hypothesize the possible linkage between past gene flow and different dormancy patterns as part of management practices, allowing the maintenance of squash populations adapted to different environmental conditions.

Meiotic chromosome counts, chromosomal behaviour and meiotic configurations of ten taxa of Senecio from Argentina were examined. Most counts are original: S. crepidifolius DC., S. francisci Phil. and S. octolepis Griseb. var. saltensis (Hicken) Cabrera & Zardini have 2n = 40, and S. chrysolepis Phil., 2n = 80 + 8B. We confirmed previous reports for S. deferens Griseb. (2n = 40 + 4B), S. filaginoides DC. var. filaginoides (2n = 40), S. hieronymi Griseb. (2n = 40 + 7B), S. pampeanus Cabrera (2n = 40) and S. rudbeckiifolius Meyen & Walp. (2n = 40 + 7B). In S. bracteolatus Hook. & Arn. var. bracteolatus, we found a new number (2n = 40) that differs from the one cited previously. In four species, numerical polymorphisms for B-chromosomes were observed. Several of the analysed species presented secondary bivalent association. This phenomenon, together with other evidence, supports x = 5 as the basic chromosome number. The number of chiasmata and their positions were also surveyed, with the finding that open bivalents were the most frequent meiotic figures and terminal chiasmata the preferential position. These features are related to recombination rate, and the success and persistence of these polyploids. We discuss some systematic and evolutionary aspects in the light of cytogenetic data and conclude that polyploidy is the major force modelling the chromosome evolution within this genus.

Vegetation History and Archaeobotany; vol. 27, no. 1
The aim of this paper is to analyse continuities and changes in plant diversity and use in the southern part of the Santa Maria valley in northwest Argentina, from the 1st millennium AD up to the Spanish Conquest in the 16th century. Variable degrees of association between people and plants (wild, weedy and domesticated), as well as various management practices (gathering, cultivation, tolerance, eradication, protection and encouragement) were studied to investigate the biocultural history of this region through the analysis of plant macroremains from archaeological sites. Samples were obtained from four archaeological sites located in the valley, Rincón Chico 1, Rincón Chico 15, Soria 2 and El Colorado. As a result, we identified 628 macroremains belonging to 20 taxa and determined whether they were either wild plants, weeds or crops, related to strategies of gathering and cultivation. The results suggest that there were changes through time, with a dominance of ruderal weeds in the earliest of the archaeological sites along with a diversity of association degrees, while a division was found between wild and domesticated plants, represented by maize and <i>Prosopis</i> (<i>algarrobo</i>), in the sites of the Late period. This last scenario suggests that the growing of trees and shrubs together with crops and pasture (agroforestry), or woodland management together with grazing (silvopasture), could have been part of the past land management practices in the area. <i>Chenopodium</i> remains indicate past complexes of wild plants, weeds and crops growing together in the cultivated plots; the newly introduced crops brought from Spain, such as wheat and barley, did not replace the local plants, mainly <i>Prosopis</i> (<i>algarrobo</i>) and <i>Zea mays</i> (maize), which were still grown during early colonial times. This paper offers a diachronic perspective on plant management in a particular region, considering a plant record that is still limited, but which allows us to get a first glimpse of how plant management strategies may have changed in this part of South America.

Aerobiologia; vol. 18, no. 1
This work studies the airborne pollen concentrations of Acer spp.,Fraxinus spp. and Platanus spp. since the pollen of these three taxa has been characterized as etiological agents of pollinosis. These tree species are present in large amounts in the streets of La Plata city. The aeropalynological monitoring was performed with a Hirst-type spore trap (Lanzoni VPPS,2000). The emission period of the three taxa extends from approximately late August to October. The maximum cumulative total of arboreal pollen was found to be 30824.7 from September 12 to 18. This period coincides with the peak of total pollen concentration.Pollen grains trapped were analysed and expressed as daily averages of 5-hour bands per day during the whole year. Maximum pollen concentration was registered between 10 a.m.and 2 p.m. During the studied period, 67 patients examined at the Allergy Service of ``Hospital Interzonalde Agudos R. Rossi'' (La Plata) showed allergic disease. These allergenic episodes may be produced by the large amount of pollen trees in the city area.

With the aim of generating a strategy for biocultural conservation, we explore the structure and robustness of the botanical medical systems in the Biosphere Reserve “Bioma Pampa-Quebradas del Norte,” Uruguay, combining ethnobotanical hypotheses and network theory. We report a heterogeneous distribution of knowledge of medicinal plants with a potential limit to the individual knowledge (truncated–power-law). The robustness analysis in the face of alternative potential scenarios of system degradation indicates that the ethnobotanical system presents a high level of resistance to the loss of agents and medicinal plants species, but also a nonlinear response with a threshold of degradation after which an abrupt collapse in system structure is expected. To counter these threats at the Biosphere Reserve, we propose to promote ethnobotanical knowledge transmission and sustainable development in rural areas, and to encourage the development of strategies for the conservation of medicinal plants.; Con el objetivo de generar una estrategia de conservación biocultural, exploramos la estructura y la robustez del sistema botánico médico en la Reserva de Biosfera “Bioma Pampa-Quebradas del Norte,” Uruguay, combinando hipótesis etnobotánicas y teoría de redes.

Ethnobiology and Conservation; vol. 8
Knowledge linked to the traditions of different groups of immigrants in the large cities is a central issue for Urban Ethnobotany, and they constitute a starting point for the discipline approach. This article contributes to the study about local botanical knowledge within the pluricultural context of Buenos Aires-La Plata Metropolitan Area, in particular, the botanical knowledge about plants and its products introduced by Chinese immigrants in the Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. The registered functional food and nutraceutical plants products marketed by these immigrants (that belong to the Traditional Chinese Phytotherapy) are locally employed for the treatment of some ailments usually linked to the urban lifestyle, such as hypercholesterolemia, anxiety, depression, sexual dysfunction, among others. In this sense, the work contributes to the understanding of the local biocultural diversity (both plants and its associated knowledge). The research followed usual qualitative ethnobotanical methods and techniques, especially semi-structured and free interviews to 250 qualified informants, prior informed consent. In addition, a bibliographic review about species biological activity and studied effects were realized, in order to compare it with the locally assigned uses. An inventory of plant products of 52 vascular plants (vegetables, legumes, fruits, condiments) locally recognized as functional foods was obtained. Plants products belonging to 30 of the 52 treated taxa are commercialized only within the restricted commercial circuit of the Chinese immigrants. Therefore, these taxa are considered “invisible” for the majority of local inhabitants.
Plants products of the 22 remaining taxa are marketed in both the restricted Chinese circuit and the general commercial one. Then, these taxa are “visible” for all residents. Local botanical knowledge is evaluated from the circulation of plant products in local trade circuits. “Invisible” taxa may become “visible” when entering the general commercial circuit. This “visualization process” of plants products and its associated knowledge express the local botanical knowledge dynamics.

Although the epithet Suffruticosi was published at different infrageneric ranks within Senecio (Asteraceae, Senecioneae) for two different taxa from South and North America, respectively, the two epithets are considered homonyms. Series Chilenses was previously published by de Candolle, but without a description.

Ethnobotany Research and Applications; vol. 19
