La participación de México como miembro de la Biblioteca sobre el Patrimonio de la Biodeversidad (Biodiversity Heritage Library, BHL)

Abstract

La Biblioteca sobre el Patrimonio de la Biodiversidad (Biodiversity Heritage Library, BHL) surgió 2007 por iniciativa de museos y bibliotecas de Estados Unidos e Inglaterra con el apoyo de Internet Archive. BHL funciona a manera de consorcio en el que trabajan bibliotecas de instituciones botánicas y de historia natural para ofrecer libre acceso en línea a sus colecciones dirigido a biólogos, taxónomos, ecólogos, bibliotecarios, estudiantes y público en general, para quienes pone a disposición un acervo de más de 170 mil volúmenes que incluyen más de 46 millones de páginas. En el 2014 la Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad (CONABIO) fue invitada a ser miembro de BHL para lo cual se decidió conformar un nodo para México e invitar a participar a las instituciones nacionales especializadas en biodiversidad que además aportaran materiales en español; actualmente BHL México cuenta con la colaboración de seis instituciones mexicanas, aunque se espera que otras más, que han aportado mucho al conocimiento de la biodiversidad mexicana, se sumen a este proyecto. El objetivo de la ponencia, es dar a conocer la experiencia de México y el flujo de trabajo para integrar las obras resguardadas en las bibliotecas e instituciones que participan y así, animar a otras instituciones a participar ya que aún falta mucho para consolidar BHL México con ayuda y la participación entusiasta de los bibliotecarios y de un equipo multidisciplinario se logrará contar con una excelente colección de obras que permita contribuir a enfrentar los retos del conocimiento de la riqueza biológica del país y su difusión.

The Biodiversity Heritage library emerged in 2007 through the initiative of some museums and libraries in the USA and Britain and with the support of the Internet Archive. BHL works as a consortium in which libraries of botanical and natural history institutions work together to offer open access to their collections and is aimed at biologists, taxonomists, ecologists, librarians, students and the general public, who have access to more than 170 thousand volumes that include over 46 million pages. In 2014 the National Comission for the Knowledge and use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) was invited to be a BHL member and it was decided that it would be a node for Mexico and would invite national institutions specialized in biodiversity who could also provide materials in Spanish; currently, BHL Mexico has the support of six Mexican institutions, although it is expected that others, who have contributed much to the knowledge of the Mexican biodiversity will join this project. The aim of this talk is to present the experience of Mexico and the workflow to integrate the items from libraries and institutions that participate in this project and encourage other institutions to participate to consolidate BHL Mexico, with the support and enthusiastic participation of librarians and a multidisciplinary team, we will achieve an excellent collection of works that will assist in meeting the challenges of the knowledge of the biological wealth of the country and its dissemination
