¿Música desinteresada?: iniciativas particulares para la organización de agrupaciones orquestales y de cámara en Bahía Blanca (1928-1959)

Abstract

Durante la primera mitad del siglo XX los músicos de Bahía Blanca constituyeron numerosas orquestas que respondieron a fines e intereses diversos. Pese a que eran consideradas como un signo de civilidad que dejaba ver el interés por las actividades “del espíritu” que existía entre los bahienses, aquellas formaciones se desarticulaban al poco tiempo de debutar en los escenarios locales. Esto halla sus razones en que, por un lado, en la ciudad no se había configurado una élite sólida con el suficiente peso económico y político como para respaldar un organismo con carácter permanente y, por otro, porque se producía una intervención pendular por parte del aparato estatal que oscilaba entre la política de subsidios y el establecimiento de partidas presupuestarias más estables, en la medida en que se creaba una estructura burocrática ocupada de los asuntos culturales. Al mismo tiempo, los propios músicos atentaban contra su profesionalización y la estabilidad de las formaciones, ya que sostenían una representación que distanciaba las prácticas académicas de los intereses materiales. Este artículo presenta un panorama de aquellas iniciativas que tuvieron origen en la sociedad civil y que procuraron organizar conjuntos orquestales a fin de insertarse como intérpretes, pero, al mismo tiempo, para promover el desarrollo cultural de la ciudad.

During the first half of the 20th century, Bahía Blanca’s musicians formed numerous orchestras that responded to diverse purposes and interests. Despite the fact that they were considered a sign of civility which showed the interest in “spiritual” activities amongst the people of Bahia, those formations dismantled shortly after debuting on local stages. The reasons for this lie in the fact that, on the one hand, there was still not a solid elite in the city with sufficient economic and political weight to support an organization with a permanent basis and, on the other, there was a pendular intervention of the state apparatus that oscillated between policies of subsidizing art, establishing fixed budgets and creating a bureaucratic structure focused on cultural affairs. Meanwhile, the musicians themselves worked against their own professionalization and the stability of the groups, since they maintained a representation that distanced academic practices from material interests. This article will attempt to present an overview of those initiatives originated in civil society and which sought to organize orchestral ensembles in order to insert themselves as performers but, at the same time, to promote the cultural development of the city.
