Estrategias de conquista: el Chaco boreal entre 1823 y 1840

Abstract

Nuestra intención es indagar sobre el proceso de conquista del Chaco boreal entre 1823 y 1840, fundamentalmente nos interesa analizar cuáles fueron las estrategias utilizadas por las autoridades salto-jujeñas para promover la expansión de sus dominios hacia el este, a las riberas del rio Bermejo. Durante ese período, las economías provinciales del actual norte argentino pasaban por importantes dificultades y el avance sobre la región chaqueña ofrecía grandes posibilidades de recuperación gracias a su riqueza agro-ganadera y a la posibilidad de abrir el Bermejo a la navegación fluvial. Los estados provinciales intentaron recuperar la iniciativa tras una década de conflicto que los empobreció junto con sus elites, obligándolos a centrar sus prioridades en la lucha contra los fidelistas altoperuanos. La finalización del conflicto les ofrecía la posibilidad de retomar el camino trazado en el periodo tardo-colonial y finalizar la conquista de la región.

Our intention is to investigate the process of conquest of the Northern Chaco between 1823 and 1840, fundamentally we are interested in analyzing what strategies were used by the Salta-Jujuy authorities to promote the expansion of their domains towards the east, to the banks of the Bermejo River. During that period, the provincial economies of what is now northern Argentina were going through significant difficulties and the advance on the Chaco region offered great possibilities of recovery thanks to its agricultural and livestock wealth and the possibility of opening the Bermejo to river navigation. The provincial states tried to regain the initiative after a decade of conflict that impoverished them along with their elites, forcing them to focus their priorities on the fight against the Alto-Peruvian Fidelists. The end of the conflict offered them the possibility of resuming the path laid out in the late colonial period and completing the conquest of the region.
