La materialidad del primer monumento histórico de la República Argentina: análisis de la casa natal de Sarmiento (San Juan)

Abstract

La casa natal de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, ubicada en la ciudad de San Juan, es el primer Monumento Histórico de la República Argentina. Desde su construcción a comienzos del siglo XIX y hasta tiempos recientes el edificio sufrió numerosas transformaciones, incluyendo una agresiva reconstrucción en 1944 que cubrió íntegramente la estructura histórica de tierra cruda con un revoque cementicio. Ello no solo dificulta todo análisis directo de los materiales y métodos originalmente empleados, sino también la identificación de sus sucesivas alteraciones. A fin de recuperar datos sobre la historia constructiva de la vivienda, se realizó un estudio que articuló documentación histórica gráfica y escrita con un registro actual desarrollado por termografía infrarroja. Los resultados obtenidos contribuyeron a una sintética caracterización de la materialidad temprana de la vivienda, a la vez que permitieron recuperar información sobre muchas modificaciones realizadas en 1944 que no fueron incluidas en ningún registro oficial.

The birthplace of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, located in the city of San Juan, is the first Historic Monument of the Argentine Republic. Since its construction in the early 19th century and until recent times, the building has undergone numerous transformations, including an aggressive reconstruction in 1944 that completely covered the historic adobe structure with cement plaster. This not only hinders any direct analysis aimed at investigating the materials and methods originally used, but also the identification of its successive alterations. In order to recover data on the construction history of the house, a study was carried out that combined historical graphic and written documentation with a current survey developed using infrared thermography. The results obtained contributed to a characterization of the early materiality of the house, while also allowing information to be recovered on the modifications made in 1944, some of which were not included in the official register.
