Producción rural y fiscalidad en el Río de la Plata durante el siglo XVIII

Abstract

Este artículo presenta un balance historiográfico sobre la relación entre producción rural y fiscalidad en el Río de la Plata durante el siglo XVIII. El trabajo aborda dos maneras de ver esa relación. En primer lugar, la extracción de recursos, especialmente a través del diezmo, permite a los investigadores efectuar estimaciones sobre el nivel de producción agraria y su evolución. De este modo, se repasan los cálculos realizados por los historiadores y las críticas que recibieron. En segundo lugar, se analizan las investigaciones que indagaron sobre la estructura fiscal rioplatense. En líneas generales, los textos destacaron el significativo gasto fiscal de la corona en la región. Ese gasto se solventaba con las remesas que llegaban desde el Alto Perú y se invertía principalmente en la defensa militar y el poblamiento de la zona. En este sentido, se argumenta que ese gasto fiscal pudo haber tenido un rol importante a la hora de crear una demanda que impulsara el crecimiento de producción rural.

This article presents an historiographical balance on the relationship between rural production and fiscally in Río de La Plata during the eighteenth century. It discusses two ways to see this relation. Firstly, the tax collections view, especially through the tithe, that allowed estimations about agrarian production levels and their development. This paper reviews such calculations made by historians and the critics they've received. Secondly, the paper presents the researches on the Río de la Plata fiscal structure. It is shown that, in general, the studies emphasized on the significance of royal fiscal expenditure in the region. That expenditure was settled with the remittances form Upper Peru and was invested mainly in military defense and settlement politics. In this sense, that fiscal expenditure could had had an important role generating a demand that pushed rural production up.
