Abstract

Desde finales del siglo XIX, la gran expansión de conservatorios privados en Bahía Blanca puso de relieve el creciente interés de la sociedad por instruirse musicalmente. El presente artículo se propone reconstruir las trayectorias de los docentes y alumnos que frecuentaron sus aulas hacia principios del siglo XX por medio del análisis de registros, memorias institucionales, programas de conciertos, normativas y prensa periódica. De acuerdo con este estudio, la enseñanza musical era concebida como una misión civilizadora que posibilitaba el mejoramiento individual y social, como un medio para tejer vínculos y como una posible actividad profesional.

Since the end of the 19th century, the great expansion of private conservatories in Bahía Blanca highlighted the growing interest of society in musical instruction. This article aims to reconstruct, through the analysis of records, institutional memories, concert programs, regulations and periodical press, the careers of the teachers and students who attended said institutions towards the beginning of the 20th century. According to this study, musical education was conceived as a civilizing mission that enabled individual and social improvement, as a means to build ties and as a possible professional activity.
