Convergence in cranial proportions in New and Old World primates: a craniofunctional analysis
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 16, no. 2
Other Primate species, such as some platyrrhine clades, evolved independently along their evolutionary history to reach high values of relative brain size. The increase in relative brain size in these Primate clades offers an opportunity to study, at a macroevolutionary scale, to what extent there was a convergence in the evolution of external cranial morphology in Primates and what changes are specific to the human species. We study global changes in craniofacial morphology in several species of Lemuriformes, Platyrrhini and Catarrhini infraorders of Primates, and their relationship with changes in brain size, using morphometric, phylogenetic and comparative techniques. A principal component analysis showed that there is an overlap in the distribution on the shape space of Homo sapiens mainly with Ateles, Saimiri and Cebus Platyrrhini genera. The comparative analyses showed the lack of phylogenetic structure in the axis of greatest morphometric variation, and its association with the changes in relative brain size. This suggests the existence of evolutionary convergence in the external morphology of the skull and points to the change in the relative size of the brain as an intrinsic factor important for understanding morphological change in the Primate order.

Ontogenetic covariation in the endocranium of Pan troglodytes
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 16, no. 2
Sin embargo, es probable que en el chimpancé se sume la influencia de distintas estructuras faciales que promuevan variación y covariación en el endocráneo.; Several studies propose that the neurocranium in Homo sapiens is an integrated structure, being the growing brain the factor that influences the vault and the base morphology. The goal of this study is to assess endocranial ontogenetic covariation in Pan troglodytes, another encephalized primate. Fifty-two 3D reconstructions derived from computed tomographies of adult and subadult specimens were analyzed. After segmentation of the endocranial volumes, twenty-seven landmarks were registered. Through their configuration, centroid size and Procrustes coordinates were obtained, and Principal Components Analysis, regression, correlation, ANOVA and Goodall’s F-test were performed in order to evaluate size and shape changes against age and allometries. The results indicated that significant morphological ontogenetic shape changes are highly integrated and they occur up to the late ontogeny: elongation of the vault and the base, separation of the foramen magnum and the cribiform plate, retroflection of the basicranial angle, and descent of the temporal poles. By means of PLS analysis, a significant covariation between the vault and the base was obtained. However, when the allometric effect was adjusted, the covariation became non-significant, as occurs in Homo sapiens. This suggests that the ontogenetic increase in the endocranial volume —related to the growing brain— may be a common integrative factor between the vault and the base in both species. Nonetheless, different facial structures are also likely to promote variation and covariation in the chimpanzee’s endocranium.

Mixed bones: presence of subadult human remains in an archaeofaunal assemblage in a prehistoric site in Eastern Uruguay
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 16, no. 2
We present the analysis of subadult human remains recovered in the archaeofaunal assemblage of the site CH2D01-A. Located in the wetland of San Miguel (Rocha, Uruguay), this mound site is dated between 2090 ±90 and 220±50 years BP, and presents 17 human burials which were excavated. Later, 514 human remains were found in the faunal assemblage, 50 of which correspond to subadult individuals. These remains were integrated to the mortuary record of the site through the analysis of anatomical and taphonomic parameters, as well as using locational data. Twenty-two of the remains were assigned to the 2 previously defined child burials, and 28 were identified as belonging to 4 new individuals, with ages estimated from 2 to 16 years old. With this analysis, the minimum number of individuals represented increases to 21, as the number of subadults goes from 2 to 6, considerably expanding the subadult record of the site, which has a remarkably low frequency despite the relatively good preservation of the osteological remains. We emphasize the importance of a joint analysis of the bioarchaeological and archaeofaunal records as a means of improving the control of taphonomical factors related to record formation processes and methodological issues.

Code of ethics for the study, conservation and management of human remains of populations from the past
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 16, no. 2
It is based on the fact that specialists, in pursuing their activities, should consider a number of premises in connection with both their rights and obligations towards the community, the profession and its study object. It highlights that human remains stored in museum and scientific institutions should be treated with dignity, sensitivity and respect, taking into consideration the sociocultural environment in which they perform their tasks. In turn, this Code establishes the necessary requirements for undertaking any study or treatment of human remains from an ethical perspective. Finally, it encourages positive interaction with those segments of society which claim some sort of relationship with specific human remains, at all times considering the national and provincial regulations currently in force.

Congruence between skeletal age and dental development in an osteological sample with documental age
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 16, no. 2
Se discuten los resultados en relación con los estudios de crecimiento y se evalúan sus implicancias en estudios bioantropológicos.; Age estimation in subadults is considered to be more accurate than in adults because during this period the main morphological and functional events associated with growth and development occur, and the progressive changes that take place in the individual during its ontogeny are well known. Age estimation studies performed on infantile-juvenile skeletal remains are mainly based on two indicators: length of long bones and tooth development. Some research has focused on comparing the estimated ages yielded by both indicators. However, studies comparing these estimates in fetal and infant period are not as frequent. This paper aims to assess the relationship between chronological age and age estimated by biological indicators in a documented skeletal sample. To achieve this objective, a sample of 35 individuals with fetal age and up to 14 postnatal months without evidence of pathologies was selected. Documental age and age estimated by the length of long bones and stages of dentition development were compared. The results indicate that age estimation by dentition and long bones length is reliable in the fetal period, but dental age is the most accurate indicator in the postnatal period. The results are discussed in relation to growth studies, and their implications for bioanthropological studies are analyzed.
