This paper presents the design of different topologies of active power filters to compensate reactive power and harmonics in the medium voltage level of a distribution power system. One pure active filter and two hybrid topologies, are implemented. A pure active compensation is obtained with a Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF). The shunt combination of SAPF and passive filter, form one of the hybrid topologies implemented, named Shunt Hybrid Active Power Filter (SHAPF). The other hybrid topology, called Hybrid Shunt Active Power Filter (HSAPF), connects the active filter in series with two shunt passive filters. Simulation for different load demands and distortions are performed. Finally a comparative evaluation of the different filters is carried out.

Many loads connected to electric power systems can cause power quality problems at all voltage levels and for very different power ratings due to their unbalanced and non-linear behavior characteristics.
This paper describes the aspects of power quality at the point of common coupling (PCC) where an arc furnace for steel melting with alternating current is connected. By measurements of Flicker, harmonics content in voltage and current, active and reactive power and power factor, the preservation of the reference levels for the supply voltage and emission limits for the furnace as a customer are evaluated.
The evaluation of power quality of contemporary International and Argentinian standards is given.
The different phases in the operation of the arc furnace are described in detail and illustrated with measurements.

Variable speed AC drives are finding their place in all types of industrial and commercial loads. One important application of these drives is in process control, controlling the speed of fans, compressors, pumps and blowers. However, there are many line (source) design parameters frequently overlooked.
A pipeline for transporting synthetic crude oil was installed in Argentina and variable frequency drives (VFD) were employed to control the centrifugal pumps, in order to provide flow and pressure control. During the commissioning and start-up program, the IITREE-LAT performed Power Quality measurements and EMC studies in the petroleum process plants.
The first part of the paper deals with the problem of commonmode voltages and its mitigation. In the second part of the paper, the preservation of the reference levels for the supply voltage and emission limits for the petroleum plant as a customer is evaluated by measurements of harmonics content in both voltage and current. An LC resonance problem was found and a practical solution was implemented.
The fulfillment of power quality limits for both International and Argentinian standards is assessed.
Finally, the behavior of the VFD – in terms of PQ indicators – under different load conditions is analyzed in detail.

Futaleufú hydropower plant has 4 Francis turbines rated 118 MW and it is connected to the power system by 2x330 kV lines. Studies carried out in the past did not predict the instable operation of Futaleufú after a 330 kV line fault, when some Futaleufú turbines are automatically disconnected as a consequence of the faulted line tripping. Load rejection caused by disconnected turbines generate large transients in the remaining turbines due to hydraulic coupling through the common conduits. Then, to improve related models and, therefore, to improve studies results of such a line fault it was necessary to make several tests in Futaleufú power plant. Finally, these models were used to conduct studies to design a new automatism, like the gate partial closing of the remaining turbines, to obtain a dynamically stable operation of Futaleufú after the disconnection by fault of a line of 330 kilovolts.

The use of electricity involves a wide range of activities that, because of its diversity, characteristics and relative importance causes different environmental impacts during the extraction, processing, transport and consuming activities. It is the role of the government to elaborate the rules for the incorporation of environmental aspects in the different segments of the market for different electrical energy sources and in all the stages of the process, from the initial evaluation to the construction and exploitation phases. Among the environmental key aspects to considerate, are the electric and magnetic fields, in which society has taken special interest as they are believed to be involved in health hazard. The faculties of the regulatory authority is dictate regulations and technique procedures to be fulfilled by the agents, and check their compliance. In the course of time since the mentioned obligations, the authority has gathered information regarding electric and magnetic fields that includes those planned in the Companies Environmental Planning and those obtained ad-hoc in the role of controller. In order to systematize this information, a data base has been designed considering different types of electric installations, the company which they belong to, equipment used in the measurements, representative layouts with measure points and profiles of the electric and magnetic fields that were obtained.
