The experimental method in Biological Anthropology. History and current status in Argentina
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 18, no. 1
Given that humans are immersed in a biological, physical and socio-cultural environment, establishing differentiation patterns proves more difficult because of the multiplicity of factors involved and their probable interactions. Variability of molar proportions in human populations: insights from developmental models and experiments in mice
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 18, no. 1
In this sense, this paper proposes: a) to evaluate the consistency between changes in molar proportions in human populations that exhibit a wide variation in tooth size and the predictions derived from an inhibitory cascade model of dental development, and b) to analyze the effect of the systemic factors controlling the growth of the organism on the lower molars proportions using strains of Mus musculus. The crown area of the mandibular molars was estimated from the bucco-lingual and mesio-distal diameters. The results obtained for human populations showed that the pattern of variation in molar proportions is consistent with expectations derived from the inhibitory cascade model and that most groups exhibit a general trend towards molar size reduction in the antero-posterior direction. Also, a significant positive association between the total molar area and the molar ratios M2/M1 and M3/M1 was observed. In the experimental models, growth alteration caused by systemic factors (protein subnutrition and reduced growth hormone) resulted in a reduction of total molar area associated with changes in molar proportions. The latter are consistent with an increased antero-posterior inhibition. Overall, these results suggest that alterations in the systemic factors that control molar area can produce changes in the proportion of activators and inhibitors, and contribute in turn to inter-population differentiation in molar proportions.

18, no. 1
Patterns of covariation result from the overlapping effect of several developmental processes. By perturbing certain specific developmental processes, experimental studies contribute to a better understanding of their particular effects on the generation of phenotype. The aim of this work was to analyze the interactions among morphological traits of the skull and the brain during late prenatal life (18.5 days postconception) in mice exposed to maternal protein undernutrition. Images from the skull and brain were obtained through micro-computed tomography and 3D landmark coordinates were digitized in order to quantify shape and size of both structures with geometric morphometric techniques. The results highlight a systemic effect of protein restriction on the size of the skull and the brain, which were both significantly reduced in the undernourished group compared to control group. Skull shape is partially explained by brain size, and patterns of shape variation were only partially coincident with previous reports for other ontogenetic stages, suggesting that allometric trajectories across pre- and postnatal ages change their directions. Within the skull, neurocranial and facial shape traits covaried strongly, while subtle covariation was found between the shape of the skull and the brain. These findings are in line with former studies in mutant mice and reveal the importance of carrying out analyses of phenotypic variation in a broad range of developmental stages. The present study contributes to the basic understanding of epigenetic relations among growing tissues and has direct implications for the field of paleoanthropology, where inferences about brain morphology are usually derived from skull remains.; Los patrones de covariación entre rasgos fenotípicos resultan de la acción de diversos procesos que se solapan durante el desarrollo.

Craneofacial effect of prenatal growth retardation and postnatal undernutrition in craniofacial growth
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 18, no. 1
The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of protein-calorie malnutrition during lactation and post-lactation on craniofacial morphology in intrauterine growth-retarded (IUGR) animals, particularly in the neural and facial functional components. Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: Control, IUGR (induced by partial bending of both uterine vessels at day 15 of gestation), and sham-operated (with the same surgical technique as IUGR, but without vessel bending). The IUGR group was further divided into (a) nursing pups of mothers with normal nutrition and fed ad-libitum at weaning, and (b) nursing pups of mothers with 25% food restriction and fed with 50% of the food ingested by controls at weaning. Radiographs were taken at 1, 21, 42, 63, and 84 days. Neural and facial length, width and height were measured, and neural and facial volumetric and morphometric indices were calculated. ANOVA and post-hoc tests were applied, and percentage differences between means were determined. Results showed that intrauterine stress is critical during early and postnatal life, since even when postnatal nutrition is normal, growth retardation persists. Furthermore, when prenatal stress is followed by postnatal nutritional restriction, adverse effects are additive and cause even greater growth retardation. Finally, while the neural component is more resistant to nutritional deficiencies, the facial component has greater plasticity, as reflected in the shape changes observed.

Multiple lines of evidence applied to the study of a prehispanic individual. Rancho Jose site, Buenos Aires province
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 18, no. 1
We present osteological, chronological, isotopic, and ancient DNA (aDNA) information obtained from the analysis of the fragmented human remains of a prehispanic individual recovered at Rancho José site. The site is situated on the right bank of the Baradero River, where water action exposed and removed various types of archaeological materials. The excavation carried out on six profiles located on the edge of the rift made it possible to determine that the finds were deposited during a single occupation event. In profile 5 the skeletal remains representing the upper portion of the skeleton of an adult individual dated in 1900±20 years BP were recovered. The taphonomic agents that could have altered the finding conditions and its associated materials were considered first. Bones sex determination and age estimation was performed and various bone and dental pathologies were examined. This information was supplemented with data from ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), stable isotopes (13C and 15N), and the identification of plant microremains in dental tartar. Although these are highly fragmented remains, the individual has retained its whole masticatory system and its analysis from different research perspectives is of interest for comparison with other individuals, both from contemporaneous sites in the surrounding area of discovery and from post-hispanic times. To that end, isotopic data from two individuals from the Cementerio Indigena site are also presented.

Influence of socioeconomic status in anthropometric variability in university students (Basque Country, Spain)
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 18, no. 1
Destaca la mayor sensibilidad de los fenotipos masculinos frente a los indicadores de tipo socioeconómico y la menor variabilidad antropométrica de las mujeres respecto a dichos factores.; Studies on the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on body dimensions have an extensive scientific tradition, since their variability and evolution are a reflection of population welfare. The aim of this work is to study theeffect of socioeconomic status (SES) on several anthropometric traits describing size, shape, and body composition, in a sample of 1105college students of both sexes (18-33 years old) living in the Basque Country. Socioeconomic status (SES) of each individual was estimated from their parents’ profession and educational level, and its influenceon anthropometric dimensions was analyzed with multivariate methodology.SES significantly influenced height (in particular the father profession) and hip circumference in both sexes. In males, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (%BF), and endomorphy were also influenced by SES. In general, individuals of higher socioeconomic status are taller, have lower values of BMI and of adiposity variables, and a more longilinear morphology. The greater sensitivity of male phenotypes in relation to socioeconomic indicators and the low anthropometric variability of women regarding these factors are to be noted.

Spatial memory in capuchin monkeys (Argentina):a wildlife observational study
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 18, no. 1
Animal studies lead us to believe that cognitive processes described in humans may have much in common with those of other species. We studied the foraging spatial behavior of capuchin monkeys and their ability to retain information about food location and quality. We analyzed whether individuals were able to integrate stored information about food sites and changes in the ripening of the resource. A qualitative observational design was used to monitor three groups of wild Cebus nigritus in their daily movements, evaluating the amounts of ripe and unripe fruit present in the fruiting trees consumed by monkeys. Visits to fruiting trees showed that monkeys remember specific information on the location and condition of each tree. These findings are essential to understand cognitive mechanisms not mediated by language, allowing a more comprehensive analysis of the biological basis of non-human spatial behavior.
