The objective of this work is to compare epiphytic diatom-based biotic indexes in lakes with distinct land-uses in their watersheds. Bulrush epiphytes and water physico-chemical characteristics were seasonally sampled in two geomorphological similar pampean shallow lakes. Seven diatom-based biotic indexes were calculated together with similarity, diversity and eutrophication indexes. According to TSI indexes Lacombe lake was eutrophic most of the time whereas La Rosita had a more variable trophy (meso-eutrophic) throughout the seasons. The latter also reached the lowest (chlorophyll a) and the highest (TP) TSI values. La Rosita always showed lower diversity and richness values than Lacombe, with a less variable specific composition through time. In those biotic indexes in which more than 70% of taxa recorded had an indication value, differences between both lakes were evinced. Several of these indexes gave worse scores to La Rosita. The IDG index could discriminate the most extreme cases. The worst conditions in La Rosita were found in spring and summer, evidenced by the IPS, TDI and IDG indexes and by Rott-t index only in spring. In Lacombe, the TDI and Rott-t indexes showed a worsening of the water quality in autumn. The TDI and the % PT were the indexes that best discriminated the differences in water quality. The less sensitive indexes were IPS, EPI-D, Rott-t and TDIL; although the latter is shallow-lake specific.

The shallow lake Sauce Grande is located in the southwest of Buenos Aires province.&#13;
It is a widening of the Sauce Grande River that flows in and out of the lake. The aim of this study is to estimate for the first time the primary productivity (PP) of this lake and to contrast the physiochemical variables, phytoplankton structure and trophic status with those of its main tributary. Monthly samplings (April-September 2014) were performed in the middle basin of the river and on the coast of the lake. We recorded in situ physical and chemical parameters with a multisensor Horiba U-10. Phytoplankton samples were collected with a plankton net for the qualitative study and with plastic bottles for quantitative analysis.The greatest physicochemical differences corresponded to turbidity and conductivity with values of 581.3 NTU and 9 mS/cm for the lake and 17.7 and 1.7, for the river. The average PP in the lake was 252.1 mg C/m3.h.&#13;
Cyanobacteria were the most abundant taxonomic group in both systems, although its abundance was greater in the shallow lake. The Carlson index, based on the concentration of chlorophyll a and total phosphorus, identifies the lake as eutrophic, while the river was classified as oligo-mesotrophic according to the same variables. Our results suggest that the Sauce Grande Lake is an autotrophic system with a highly productive metabolism. The remaining production becomes biomass and accumulates within the system, in the form of high levels of phytoplankton abundance, in particular a massive proliferation of Cyanobacteria.

In central Argentina the alternation of cycles of rainfall above or below the historic mean is frequent; so, many saline lakes can dry or fill in a short time. As in La Pampa most of the studies on these lakes were limited to annual cycles, the information about variations under different climatic conditions is scarce. The aims of this study were to determine the limnological and zooplankton parameters of a semi-permanent Pampean saline lake during 2013 posterior to its filling after a drought, to compare the information with that obtained in 2007, because the two annual cycles had relatively different environmental characteristics and to test the hypotheses i) in 2013, after filling, scarce tolerant zooplankton species were recorded, replaced by more tolerant ones as salinity increased and ii) species richness in 2013 was greater than that recorded during higher hydrologic stability. Samples were taken between January and December of both years. In 2007 depth was stable and in 2013 it fluctuated markedly. The mean salinity was similar, close to 26 g/L. In 2007 it was stable, but in 2013 rose from 14.3 g/L (January) to 40.4 g/L (December). Transparency was the highest in 2007 (0.76 m ± 0.26) and the lowest in 2013 (0.17 m ± 0.05). The concentration of chlorophyll a in 2007 was lower ( (1.73 mg/ m3 ± 1.25) than in 2013 (38.16 mg/m3 ± 42.33). Species richness showed six species in 2007 and seven species in 2013. In 2007 crustaceans predominated, especially Boeckella poopoensis, but in 2013 rotifers dominated. Among them, Brachionus plicatilis and B. dimidiatus presented a maximum in autumn (1702 and 2062 ind/L, respectively). Daphnia menucoensis was absent during 2013 and the inverse correlation between the density of this cladoceran and chlorophyll a concentration could show its influence on water transparency because of its grazing on phytoplankton. The differences in limnological parameters allow us to know the variability of environmental conditions of a Pampean saline lake and to expand our knowledge about tolerance ranges of some endemic species as B. poopoensis and Moina eugeniae.

<title>Impacto del uso del suelo sobre la condición de ribera en arroyos pampeanos y su relación con la estructura de la comunidad de peces</title>

In the last 30 years agricultural areas have occupied a larger proportion of cultivable zone in the Pampa Plain, generating the movement of livestock activities to the margins of waterways. These changes in land use can cause hydrological, morphological, physicochemical and biological alterations in the lotic systems of this region. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of different types of land use on the structure of the fish community in streams of the middle basin of Areco River. To do this, monthly samplings were realized during the summer of 2014 in four tributaries of the Areco River. Two of these sections were associated with an unfenced livestock use on the bank stream, while the other two sites had an agricultural use with preserved riparian zone. In each sampling site the structure of the riparian zone was evaluated by applying a quality index of the banks. On each sampling date physicochemical and hydrological parameters were surveyed and the fish community was sampled. The quality of the banks in places exposed to livestock was lower than in those dedicated to agricultural use. In the latter, the values of suspended solids were lower while the total coverage of macrophytes was higher. Moreover, the total fish biomass was higher in the sites with higher level of preservation of the riparian zone. Significant differences were also observed in the fish species composition among sites with contrasting land use. There were strong positive correlations between the proportion of piscivores and the integrity of the bank. These results show a consistent relationship between the land use and the quality of the bank, which ultimately have an impact on the structure of the fish community in the lotic systems of the Pampa Plain.

The trophic state is usually defined by the concentrations of total phosphorous and chlorophyll a. Besides the input of nutrients from catchment, the internal process can modify the trophic state in reservoirs and lakes. Embalse Río Tercero is a multipurpose reservoir that has been object of a limnological study since 1996, as a requirement of the Nuclear Power Plant that uses the water for cooling. Invasive species have been reported in this reservoir: the mussel Limnoperna fortunei Dunker 1857, since 1996 and the dinoflagellate Ceratium hirundinella (O.F.Müller) Dujardin 1841, since 1999. As a result of their successful colonization, some characteristics of water quality and plankton composition have been modified. Despite this, during a long time period, the trophic state has not been modified. However, since 2013 noticeable increases in phosphorous and clorophyll a have been detected, and C. hirundinella reached exceptional abundances and became the dominant algae. Coincidentally, L. fortunei almost disappeared without any apparent reason. We intended to interpret the long-term tendencies of main trophic variables, and hypothesized some explanations for the population changes of C. hirundinella.

Coincidentally, L. fortunei almost disappeared without any apparent reason. More than 50,000 sub-rounded shallow lakes fed by rain are found on sandy hills fed by rain in Corrientes Province. We selected two lakes near Saladas city as representative of the wetlands prevailing in the region. The aim of this study is to describe the changes in the ecological state of Soto and Sánches lakes, from the use of the basin and recurrence of wet and dry periods. Thirty non periodic samplings were carried out in each lake between 1992 and 2014, during years with different rainfall regime. According to the annual precipitation we distinguish three periods: 1992-1999 (with high rainfalls); 2000-2010 (with prolonged droughts) and 2011-2014 (with heavy rains concentrated in autumn and spring). At both lakes the aquatic plant volume infested differed over the years. In the first period, Soto Lake became eutrophic due to illegal sewage connections from a new neighborhood. The high ratio depth/depth of the photic zone indicates the state of turbid water with dominance of cyanobacteria and high mean and maximum chlorophyll a. After operation of the treatment plant sewage, Soto Lake became characterized as mesotrophic during the dry period and subsequently oligotrophic. During the study period, Sánches Lake had clear water with a high phosphorus concentration, but it had a single bloom of cyanobacteria in the last period. In lakes fed by rain, long-term studies that include dry and wet periods allow for more accurate diagnosis of the ecological state. The use of different indicators, besides the nutrient content is recommended to determine the trophic state.
