The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of habitat on the application of biotic indices (BI) based on benthic macroinvertebrates. Two different habitats were sampled, (macrophytes patches and sediments), in two sites in the Dulce River (Salí-Dulce basin, Argentina): S1 (27° 31’ 5.82” S, 64°52’41.37” W) and S2 (27° 28’ 36.21” S, 64° 49’ 30.30” W). Sampling was conducted in a low-flow period, 2015-October. The variables measured were pH, electric conductivity (EC μS/cm), temperature (T °C), total suspended solids (TSS mg/L), dissolved oxygen (OD mg/L) and biological oxygen demand (BOD5 mg/L). Macroinvertebrates were filtered with a nylon net of 250 μm pore size and were identified at the required taxonomic level for BI application. Taxonomic richness and diversity were analyzed. Three BI were applied: the IBMWP for the Iberian Peninsula, the BMWP’ adapted for Salí River basin and the IMRP developed for the Pampean ecoregion from Argentina. Also score ASPT associated with BMWP’ was applied. Physical and chemical parameters showed good water quality, with a pH average of 8.57; EC 773 μS/cm; T 19.5°C; TSS 9.27 mg/L; DO 7.49 mg/L; and BOD5 3.29 mg/L. The registered taxa were 34 and the diversity was greater in macrophytes than in sediments. The BI showed different results according to the habitat where they were applied. Macrophytes contribute with twice of the taxa for the BI calculations, compared with sediments. The ASPT values corresponded to impacted water quality. The IMRP was the most inclusive in terms of the number of taxa for calculation. The conclusion is that the type of habitats influences the BI application.

We analyzed the composition, specific diversity, abundance, number of endemism’s and trophic structure of the fish community of the Paraíso stream, affluent of the Uruguay River. Four fish samplings were carried out between September 2013 and March 2015, with eight monofilament gillnets. The total catch was 217 individuals distributed in 35 species of which 77% belong to the orders Characiformes (16 species) and Siluriformes (11 species) and the remaining 33% to the orders Perciformes (seven species) and Gymnotiformes (one species). The alpha diversity of effective numbers was 16.44. According to the non-parametric Chao 1 estimator, the species inventory was incomplete it would be necessary to find at least 16 species. Rare or accidental species accounted for 66%, with relative abundance of less than 10%. Common species were Crenicichla missioneira, Leporinus amae, Leporinus striatus and Astyanax lacustris. Seven endemic species from the Uruguay River basin were registered: C. missioneira, C. celidochilus, C. tendybaguassu, L. amae, Astyanax paris, A. troya, and Hemiancistrus fulliginosus. Most of the species captured (83%) were small. The community dominance index was higher during the spring (0.81). Organic matter of allochthonous origin was the main food resource. Six trophic categories were recognized, mostly detritivores and omnivores (61.5%). The community presented reproductive activity during all seasons of the year, with a preponderance in spring and winter with species such as L. striatus and A. piracicabae. The high specific diversity, endemism and the high dependency of the allochthonous organic material of the ichthyofauna demand the urgent need of protection and conservation of this watercourse.

The Sauce Grande Lake, a shallow, eutrophic, and hyposaline lake, was studied through monthly samplings during a year (December 2009- November 2010). The drought that affected the region since 2009 and during the entire study period interrupted the regular inflow from the river and outflow to the Atlantic Ocean. The lake presented an increase of salinity values and highly turbid conditions as a result of the drought conditions and wind resuspension. Small cladocerans such as Moina micrura and the copepod Boeckella poopoensis dominated the mesozooplankton community. The salinity determined the mesozooplankton composition; meanwhile, the abundance dynamic was ruled by temperature in conjunction with the eutrophic conditions during the study period. In a global context of climate change, and in a region where drought and wet cycles are frequent, these results further contribute to understanding the processes affecting the zooplankton community structure and dynamics during extreme climate events.

The composition and distribution of algae associations in lotic ecosystems are the result of conditions in the environment and in particular may reflect their structure and functioning. The objective of this work was to study the relationship of the richness, abundance and diversity of the diatom assemblages with the environmental characteristics in three basins of the province of San Luis. Fourteen sampling sites were selected in three basins: seven sites in the Río de Conlara basin, three sites in the Río Quinto basin and finally four sites in the Bebedero basin. In each sampling site, hydraulic and physicochemical parameters were recorded. Epilithic samples were obtained by scraping small rocks from the bottom of the streams. The structure of the assemblages was characterized by pennate diatoms that prevailed qualitatively and quantitatively. The variations of physicochemical parameters influenced the specific composition of the assemblages and allowed to establish two groups of species: one constituted by Nitzschia palea, Melosira varians, Navicula tripunctata and Halamphora veneta that were associated to streams with highest order number and maximum conductivity values. Geissleria decussis, Epithemia sorex and Cymbella affinis constituted the second group related to highest discharge and pH values. Navicula radiosa and Rhopalodia gibba were related to altitude and dissolved oxygen concentration, respectively. A substantiated floristic reference of diatoms allows to make a trustworthy diagnosis on the ecological state of the analyzed streams, as well as to establish monitoring programs for the province.

Given its distribution, abundance and trophic characteristics, and the importance as a food resource for aquatic and terrestrial vertebrates, the benthic crustaceans Aegla sp. and Samastacus sp. are key components in the transfer of matter and energy in lakes and rivers of Patagonia. We aimed to determine if didymo algal blooms occurring in the littoral zone of the Upper Limay River affect the abundance of both crustaceans. In the summer of 2016, 2017 and 2018 four locations of the river were surveyed, establishing reaches with and without the presence of didymo (CD with Didymo and SD without Didymo, respectively). We sampled the littoral zone in three habitats regarding the distance to shoreline (shore, shallow and deep). At each sample we recorded: number of macrocrustaceans, percentage of algae cover, algal growth characteristics (isolated colonies, mats), distance to the shoreline, depth, current velocity at bottom, among other variables. During the study, 855 Aegla riolimayana specimens were quantified with mean abundance of 10.0 ind/m2 and frequency of 73% and only 30 individuals of Samastacus spinifrons (0.3 ind/m2 and 4%, respectively). Given such differences, only A. riolimayana was analyzed. Its abundance did not differ between CD and SD reaches (P>0.05), though it was slightly lower in CD reaches (median = 1 vs. 2 ind./sample, respectively). Percent didymo cover was lower and A. riolimayana abundance was higher at shore compared to shallow and deep sectors. However, A. riolimayana abundance and percent didymo cover did not correlate suggesting that at the reach scale there is no negative effect of didymo on the abundance and distribution of A. riolimayana.
