Coupling occurs outside water and females, that are noticeably larger than males, move to streams where eggs are released at the stream bottom. Multiple mating was observed in a large chorus context, but males’ aggregations seem to be uncommon in the species. Multiple spawning in Neotropical frogs occurs in several lineages and it seems to be related to the behavioral context.

Taxocenosis of Serpentes (Sauropsida: Squamata) of Jujuy province, Argentina
Cuadernos de Herpetología; vol. 34, no. 1
In this work, we present a review on the composition and geographic distribution of the taxocenose of the snakes from Jujuy province (Argentina), based on the analysis of field-work records, specimens housed in public collections and literature revision. We analyzed a total of 819 records from 42 taxa belonging to Leptotyphlopidae (2), Boidae (2), Viperidae (3), Elapidae (1), Colubridae (3), and Dipsadidae (31). We discuss records relevant for conservation and biogeography of 18 species. Species richness is heterogeneous and variable depending on phytogeographic province and altitude. The highest numbers of species were recorded in the Yungas and Chaco, which reinforces the need to preserve and conserve these ecoregions in Jujuy. The models of potential distribution of viperid and elapid overlap with the most populated areas, thus indicating the need for the promotion of science divulgation to prevent conflicts with people and as a contribution to public health.; Presentamos una revisión sobre la taxocenosis y distribución geográfica de serpientes en la provincia de Jujuy (Argentina) a partir del análisis de especímenes obtenidos en trabajos de campo, especímenes depositados en colecciones públicas y de la revisión crítica de la literatura. Cuadernos de Herpetología; vol. 34, no. 1
Gymnophthalmidae is a family of Neotropical lizards from which its ecology has been widely studied in the lowlands. However, the life history of Andean species is still poorly known.
Apparently, these species are tolerant to anthropic habitats. The objective of this study is to describe some aspects of the biology of one species of this family, Riama striata, in a highly urbanized locality in the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes. I describe microhabitat use, shelter preference, activity patterns, population structure and sexual dimorphism of the species. Riama striata uses both artificial and natural substrates that are mainly microhabitats of rock or concrete, and males prefer bricks even though this is the least frequent refuge available.
The species has a bimodal diurnal activity, particularly on sunny days. It is sexually dimorphic in the size of the head; males have larger heads. There is a high abundance of individuals, with a greater number of females and juveniles than males. These results, together with those of other Andean species contrast sharply with the studies in gymnophthalmids and alopoglosids of the lowlands and raise new hypotheses about the ecology and life history of these lizards and how they respond to the effects of anthropic impact.; La familia Gymnophthalmidae comprende lagartos neotropicales cuya ecología ha sido ampliamente estudiada en tierras bajas.

<dc:description>Gymnophthalmidae is a family of Neotropical lizards from which its ecology has been widely studied in the lowlands.
These results, together with those of other Andean species contrast sharply with the studies in gymnophthalmids and alopoglosids of the lowlands and raise new hypotheses about the ecology and life history of these lizards and how they respond to the effects of anthropic impact.

Reproductive biology of Bothrops alternatus in a South America template area: male reproductive cycle
Cuadernos de Herpetología; vol. 34, no. 1
The pitviper Bothrops alternatus is one of the most widely distributed and abundant venomous snake species in the South America template area. However, knowledge about their reproductive biology is mostly known for data from Brazilian populations, finding few data for the Argentine populations. The life history of snakes is influenced by ecological factors such as regional variations in climatic seasons, generating differences in reproductive biology between populations in different regions. We present the male reproductive cycle of B. alternatus at its southern distribution limit, based on morpho-anatomical and histological data. The testicular volume varied throughout the seasons, coinciding its increase and decrease with the increase and decrease in temperature. However, the morpho-anatomical measures did not show all the different stages through which the B. alternatus testicle passes. In spring the testicles were in recrudescence and in summer began the spermiogenesis that extended until the beginning of autumn (April). Testicular regression began in May (autumn) and in winter the seminiferous epithelium of the testicles retracts completely, being in total regression towards July and until the beginning of September (winter). Males of B. alternatus were reproductively active during spring / summer and reproductively inactive during autumn / winter, determining a seasonal reproductive cycle. However, sperm were found in the deferens ducts throughout all the year.
With this study, we provide evidence to support the importance of the microscopic approach for studies of reproductive cycles. Finally, we discuss the synchronization of the male reproductive cycle with the female reproductive cycle in the southernmost population of B. alternatus.; La yarará grande Bothrops alternatus es una especie de serpiente venenosa ampliamente distribuida y abundante en el área templada de América del Sur.

Trophic ecology of Liolaemus espinozai Abdala, 2005 (Sauria: Liolaemidae) in Campo El Arenal, Catamarca, Argentina
Cuadernos de Herpetología; vol. 34, no. 1
Diet studies are essential to understand the ecological and evolutionary phenomena that influence animals, because they provide information on the species interactions with the environment and with other organisms. We described the trophic ecology of Liolaemus espinozai from Campo El Arenal (Catamarca, Argentina), type locality of the species, using the stomach contents of males and females. We determined the importance of each prey item, trophic amplitude and diversity, and similarity of stomach contents between males and females; the stomach volume was compared intra and intersexually and we evaluated the relationship between the size of the individual and preys. We determined a total of 3151 preys grouped into 17 trophic categories. The population is generalist and insectivorous, feeding mainly on ants (formicids); the trophic amplitude is low, with large fluctuations throughout the year. There is no relationship between body and head size of lizards and prey size. Males and females share about 80% of the diet, so there would be competition for food.

Sexual dimorphism and allometry feature is the main categories of intraspecific variation found in the animal kingdom, and techniques such as Geometric Morphometrics are effective to investigate variations in shape. We analyzed 75 specimens of A. brunoi from Parque Nacional da Restinga de Jurubatiba and found significant ontogenetic and static allometries in head shape, as well as sexual dimorphism after size correction. Regarding sexual dimorphism, females tend to have larger heads, besides slightly anteriorly positioned nostrils, smaller eyes, larger canthal ridges, narrower and longer frontoparietal ridges, and larger and laterally shifted squamosal ridges.
We discuss the relevance of head morphology variation in the species, as well as the presumed consequences on the species fitness.; Dimorfismo sexual e alometria são as principais categorias de variação intraespecífica encontradas em metazoários e técnicas como a Morfometria Geométrica são eficazes para investigar variações na forma.
