Ethical challenges associated with the study and treatment of human remains in anthropological sciences in the 21st century
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 23, no. 2
The process of exhumation, the analysis and the storage of remains have been the focus of regular attention from professionals and the media. Furthermore, due to the emergence of new technologies and methodologies, a number of additional issues have emerged over the past two decades. The aim of this article is to highlight the contemporary ethical challenges that the anthropological sciences and those involved in the study and treatment of human remains around the world are confronted with. Throughout this article, the characteristics of identified skeletal collections, the creation of human taphonomy facilities, the increase in destructive sampling (for biomolecular and histological analysis) and the use of digital imaging are explored, as well as the trade of human remains. Ethical concerns associated with each of these challenges are examined from a global perspective and within the Argentine local context. These issues are summarized taking recent history and contemporary research into account. Finally, on the basis of the topics raised throughout this article, a list of detailed recommendations is provided with the aim of improving ethical awareness and practice in anthropological science.

Hypertension, over weight and abdominal obesity in adult women from the Puna of Catamarca, Argentina
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 23, no. 2
La hipertensión arterial (HTA) y la obesidad son problemas crecientes y de riesgo para el desarrollo de enfermedades crónicas, por ejemplo, el síndrome metabólico, entre otras. Son escasos los datos relativos a poblaciones de altura de América del Sur. El objetivo fue analizar las prevalencias de exceso de peso, obesidad abdominal e hipertensión arterial en mujeres adultas, residentes permanentes a más de 3000 msnm, de dos localidades de población concentrada de la Puna de Catamarca, Argentina. Se analizaron 105 mujeres adultas, de la villa de Antofagasta de la Sierra y El Peñón, de Antofagasta de la Sierra, Catamarca. Se obtuvieron las medidas de peso, talla, perímetro de cintura y valores de presión arterial sistólica (PAS) y diastólica (PAD). Se calculó el índice de masa corporal (IMC) e índice cintura- talla (ICT). El sobrepeso representó el 38,1%, la obesidad el 17,1% y la obesidad abdominal el 84%. La prevalencia de hipertensión arterial fue de 16,2%. Existe una correlación positiva entre IMC y la PAS, y entre la edad y la PAD. Los valores de PAS fueron significativamente mayores en mujeres con obesidad, respecto a aquellas con normopeso. No hubo diferencias de PAD según las categorías de estado nutricional.&#13;
A su vez en mujeres normopesas no se observaron diferencias en los valores de PAS y PAD en presencia o ausencia de obesidad abdominal. La diferencia entre HTA en presencia de exceso de peso y obesidad abdominal no es significativa, y tampoco difiere en mujeres con normopeso con y sin obesidad abdominal.&#13;
Conclusión: las mujeres adultas analizadas presentaron altas prevalencias de exceso de peso compatible en un contexto de transición nutricional. A su vez 9 de cada 10 mujeres presentaron obesidad abdominal junto a bajas prevalencias de hipertensión arterial sin relación entre ellas. Se comprobó asociación sólo entre HTA y obesidad.; Hypertension, together with obesity, are known growing risk factors for the development of chronic diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, among others. There are few data on South American high-altitude populations. The objective was to analyze the prevalence of excess weight, abdominal obesity, and arterial hypertension in adult women, permanent residents of the Puna of Catamarca, Argentina One hundred and five adults of the female sex were analyzed, from the towns of Antofagasta de la Sierra and of El Peñón, in Antofagasta de la Sierra, Catamarca. Weight, height, waist circumference and systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure measurements were obtained.&#13;
Body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were calculated. Overweight prevalence was 38,1%, obesity 17,1%, and abdominal obesity 84%. The prevalence of arterial hypertension was 16,2%. There is a positive correlation between BMI and SBP, and between age and DBP. SBP values were significantly higher in women with obesity, compared to those with normal weight. There were no differences in DBP according to the nutritional status categories. In turn, in normal-weight women, no differences were observed in SBP and DBP values in the presence or absence of abdominal obesity.&#13;
The difference between arterial hypertension in the presence of excess weight and abdominal obesity is not significant, nor does it differ in normal-weight women with and without abdominal obesity. Conclusion: The adult women analyzed here presented a high prevalence of excess weight compatible in a context of nutritional transition. In turn, 9 out of 10 women presented abdominal obesity, together with a low prevalence of unrelated arterial hypertension. An association was found only between arterial hypertension and obesity.

Geographical distribution of high blood pressure in its relationship with excess weight in children living in the productive belt of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 23, no. 2
El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo analizar en escolares que viven en el cinturón productivo de La Plata: a) la relación entre presión arterial elevada (PAE) y exceso ponderal (EP) y b) la distribución geográfica de dicha relación. Durante los ciclos lectivos 2015-2017 se relevaron: presión arterial sistólica y diastólica (mmHg), peso (kg) y talla (cm) de 2.268 escolares entre 6 y 12 años, residentes en distintos centros comunales del periurbano platense y se determinaron los casos de PAE y EP. Se obtuvo información del entorno socio-ambiental de residencia mediante una encuesta estructurada. Se calcularon prevalencias de PAE y EP y frecuencias de las características del entorno, que fueron comparadas mediante pruebas de Chi cuadrado (X2). Se analizó, además, la incidencia del EP sobre la PAE mediante regresión logística. El 44,9% de los escolares presentó EP y el 19,4% PAE. Las comparaciones múltiples para PAE entre centros comunales permitieron diferenciar dos regiones: región norte (RN) con menores prevalencias de PAE y EP y región sur (RS) con mayores prevalencias. Las variables del entorno de residencia fueron significativamente diferentes entre ambas regiones y la incidencia del EP sobre la PAE fue mayor en la RS. Se concluye que el cinturón productivo de La Plata, presenta una realidad preocupante en materia de salud infantil. El análisis a partir del proceso de urbanización, muestra que la RN es menos urbanizada y la RS más urbanizada y registra prevalencias de PAE más elevadas con mayor incidencia del EP sobre la ocurrencia de PAE.; The present work aims to analyze in schoolchildren living in the productive belt of La Plata: a) the relationship between high blood pressure (HBP) and excess weight (EW), and b) the geographical distribution of that relationship. During the 2015-2017 school years, the systolic and diastolic blood pressure (mmHg), weight (kg), and height (cm) of 2,268 schoolchildren, from 6 to 12 years old, residing in different communities in the peri-urban area of La Plata were surveyed.&#13;
The cases of HBP and EW were determined. Information on the socio-environmental conditions of residence was obtained through a structured survey. The prevalence of HBP and EW, and the frequencies of environmental conditions were calculated and compared using Chi square tests (X2). Furthermore, the incidence of EW on HBP was analyzed using logistic regression. The results indicated that 44.9% of the schoolchildren presented EW and 19.4% HBP. The Multiple comparisons of HPB among community centers made it possible to differentiate two regions: a northern region (NR), with the lowest prevalence of HBP and EW, and a southern region (SR), with the highest prevalence. The variables of the residence environment were significantly different between both regions and the incidence of EW on HBP was higher in the SR. It is concluded that the productive belt of La Plata presents a worrying reality in relation to children’s health. The analysis from the urbanization process shows that the NR is less urbanized, while the SR is more urbanized and registers higher prevalence rates of HBP with a higher incidence of EW over the occurrence of HBP.

Scavenging and scattering pig remains (Sus scrofa) in wetland contexts: forensic implications
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 23, no. 2
Se infiere una relación entre la secuencia de desarticulación y dispersión con el intervalo post mortem.; Scavengers are known to significantly alter a forensic scene by consuming and disarticulating remains, and scattering debris on the surface of the ground. For this reason, rapid identification of their presence is crucial in order to understand their consequences on forensic record. Directional scattering patterns were recorded, mostly generated by the behavior of each of the species. A relationship between the disarticulation and dispersion sequence is inferred with post mortem interval.

Sexual estimation in bone remains of huntergatherers from Central Patagonia, Argentina: contrasting of morphometric methods with paleogenetic analysis
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 23, no. 2
En el presente trabajo se comparan los resultados de la estimación de sexo en restos óseos humanos antiguos de individuos adultos de la Patagonia central argentina (N=42) a partir de dos métodos: por una parte, el estudio de estructuras de la pelvis, el cráneo, el húmero, el fémur y la tibia; por otra, el análisis molecular de secuenciación masiva (Next Generation Sequencing), mediante herramientas bioinformáticas validadas para ADN antiguo. Los resultados mostraron que la concavidad subpúbica y el arco ventral de la pelvis, el proceso mastoides del cráneo y las fórmulas propuestas por Béguelin para fémur y húmero ofrecen las estimaciones del sexo más confiables en esta muestra de restos humanos arqueológicos de Patagonia central. Por el contrario, las estructuras de la tibia y el ancho bicondilar del humero y el fémur ofrecen resultados significativamente diferentes o con bajas asociaciones a los obtenidos por métodos moleculares.&#13;
Futuros análisis deberán enfocarse en estudios similares en esqueletos de subadultos.; The present study compares the results of sex estimation in ancient human bone remains of adult individuals from Argentine central Patagonia (N = 42) using two methods. On the one hand, the study of structures of the pelvis, skull, humerus, femur, and tibia. On the other hand, the biological sex estimated by means of molecular analysis (Next Generation Sequencing), using bioinformatic tools validated for ancient DNA. The results showed that sex estimations based on features of the pelvis (subpubic concavity and ventral arc), the mastoid process of the skull and the formulas proposed by Béguelin for humerus and femur were statistically similar to molecular results in this particular sample from Patagonia. In contrast, the estimations based on structures of the tibia and bicondylar width of humerus and femur were significantly different from molecular sex estimations. Further research needs to be conducted in order to test sex-estimation methods on subadult skeletons.

<description>Articulo
Estimates of age of individuals, locomotion speed and possible activity from human footprints at Monte Hermoso site 1
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 23, no. 2
El sitio arqueológico Monte Hermoso 1 (Buenos Aires, Argentina), presenta un registro abundante de pisadas humanas, datadas ~7000 AP, que fueron impresas en el sedimento de una marisma mixohalina. El objetivo de este estudio fue realizar estimaciones de edad y velocidad de locomoción correspondientes a 15 rastros de individuos, en base a datos originales de Bayón y Politis (1996). Las estimaciones de edad se realizaron en base a curvas de crecimiento.&#13;
Las edades estimadas, correspondientes a niños y adolescentes entre 2,5 y 14,5 años, y posiblemente un individuo juvenil-adulto joven, concuerdan con interpretaciones previas.&#13;
La velocidad de locomoción fue estimada a partir de la relación empírica entre la velocidad adimensional (número de Froude) y la longitud del paso adimensional. Las velocidades obtenidas son heterogéneas, en el rango entre 3–12km/h, y se clasifican en: 1) velocidades compatibles con la de caza recolección en niños de edad similar (≤3km/h), 2) velocidades compatibles con la caminata de confort, en el rango entre 3,8 y 4,6km/h, asociadas a un menor costo energético, quizás de exploración, por parte de niños y adolescentes, del territorio circundante, y 3) velocidades &gt;5km/h compatibles con juego, persecución de una pequeña presa, o huida. La metodología utilizada en este estudio para la estimación de la velocidad puso en evidencia una diversidad de patrones locomotores en los individuos que dejaron sus rastros en el sitio Monte Hermoso 1, lo cual podría mejorar las inferencias sobre los comportamientos asociados.; The Monte Hermoso 1 archaeological site (Buenos Aires province, Argentina), shows an abundant record of human footprints, dated to ~ 7000 BP, which were imprinted on a mixohaline marsh shores. The objective of this study was to estimate the age and locomotion speed corresponding to 15 tracks of individuals, based on the original data of Bayón &amp;amp; Politis (1996). Age estimates were made based on growth curves from the literature. The estimated ages, corresponding to children and adolescents between 2.5 and 14.5 years, and possibly 1 juvenile-young adult, generally agree with previous interpretations.&#13;
The locomotion speed was estimated from the empirical relationship between the dimensionless speed (Froude number) and the dimensionless stride length.&#13;
Estimated speeds were in the range of 3-12km/h and could be classified into: 1) speeds compatible with those of hunting gathering in children of similar age (≤3km/h), 2) speeds compatible with comfort walking, in the range between 3.8 and 4.6 km / h, associated with a lower energy cost, perhaps for exploration of the surrounding territory, and 3) speeds&amp;gt;5km/h compatible with play, chasing a small prey, or simply an escape.&#13;
The methodology used in this study to estimate locomotion speed revealed a diversity of locomotor patterns in the individuals who left their tracks at the Monte Hermoso 1 site, which could improve assessments about associated behaviors.

<dc:description>El sitio arqueológico Monte Hermoso 1 (Buenos Aires, Argentina), presenta un registro abundante de pisadas humanas, datadas ~7000 AP, que fueron impresas en el sedimento de una marisma mixohalina. El objetivo de este estudio fue realizar estimaciones de edad y velocidad de locomoción correspondientes a 15 rastros de individuos, en base a datos originales de Bayón y Politis (1996). Las estimaciones de edad se realizaron en base a curvas de crecimiento.&#13;
Las edades estimadas, correspondientes a niños y adolescentes entre 2,5 y 14,5 años, y posiblemente un individuo juvenil-adulto joven, concuerdan con interpretaciones previas.&#13;

Estimation of admixture in two Venezuelan populations using Ancestry Informative Markers and haplogroups of mitochondrial DNA
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 23, no. 2
Los marcadores informativos de ancestralidad (AIM) autosómicos y los del ADN mitocondrial (ADNmt) son muy útiles para identificar el origen y los patrones de migración de las poblaciones. En este trabajo se estimó el mestizaje a partir de siete AIM en 188 individuos venezolanos, 84 del estado Guárico y 104 de la región centro occidental de Venezuela (RCO), se estimó la ancestralidad mitocondrial en el estado Guárico y se compararon ambas poblaciones según su origen y desarrollo histórico.&#13;
Este estudio representa la primera aproximación a la composición genética de Guárico y es el primer reporte para Venezuela utilizando marcadores tipo AIM. Los resultados revelaron que los aportes amerindio y europeo predominan en estas poblaciones, pero el amerindio es mayor en Guárico (50,57%) que en RCO (44,92%), y el europeo lo es en RCO (38,46% vs. 33,72%). El origen del ADNmt en Guárico es de predominio amerindio (80%), tendencia similar a lo reportado para RCO (75%). El aporte amerindio en Guárico es el más alto reportado para Venezuela. Se concluye que las diferencias encontradas entre ambas muestras podrían deberse a la colonización más temprana de la RCO y a su desarrollo industrial moderado durante el siglo XIX. Así mismo, planteamos que los AIM aquí utilizados lograron una buena discriminación del aporte de los tres grupos ancestrales principales y que su uso simultáneo con polimorfismos de origen uniparental permite obtener, en forma económica, una mejor aproximación genética para explicar la dinámica del proceso de mestizaje que dio origen a la población venezolana actual; Ancestral informative markers (AIMs) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are highly useful to understand the origin of populations and their migration patterns. In this work, admixture was estimated using seven AIMs in 188 Venezuelan individuals, 84 belonging to the state of Guárico and 104 belonging to the central western region of Venezuela (RCO). Mitochondrial ancestry of Guárico was also determined, and both populations were compared according to their origin and historical development. This study constitutes the first approximation to the genetic composition of Guárico, and it is the first report for Venezuela using AIMs. The results revealed that Amerindian and European contributions predominate in these populations, but Amerindian is higher in Guárico (50.57%) than in RCO (44.92%), while European is higher in RCO (38.46% vs. 33.72%).&#13;
In Guárico mtDNA is predominantly Amerindian (80%), as previously reported for RCO (75%). The Amerindian contribution in Guárico is the highest reported for Venezuela.&#13;
We conclude that the differences found between both samples could be due to an earlier colonization of RCO and to its moderate industrial development during the nineteenth century. We also conclude that the AIMs used here made a good differentiation of the contribution of the three main ancestral groups at a relatively low cost, so that their use, together with polymorphisms of uniparental origin, allows a better genetic approach to explaining the dynamics of the mixing process giving rise to the current Venezuelan population.

Migration patterns and levels of genetic diversity of maternal lineages in the population of La Esperanza, Jujuy province
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 23, no. 2
El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo contribuir al conocimiento de la historia poblacional de La Esperanza, Jujuy, en base al estudio de la diversidad y distribución relativa de linajes del ADN mitocondrial, sobre una muestra poblacional de 94 personas. Se analizaron las afinidades genéticas entre los linajes maternos encontrados en La Esperanza y 43 poblaciones sudamericanas a partir de datos tomados de la bibliografía.&#13;
Los resultados muestran que los linajes nativos americanos constituyen el 100% de la muestra, siendo B2 el haplogrupo más frecuente (45%), seguido de D1, A2 y C1 con una contribución del 21%, 17% y 16%, respectivamente. Por último, un solo individuo presentó el linaje D4h3a. El análisis de distancias interpoblacionales revela bajos valores de distancia con las muestras Quechua de Huancavelica, Avá Guaraní y Pilagá. El análisis discriminante ubicó a la muestra de La Esperanza en el grupo Chaco, tanto cuando se la asignó a los grupos Chaco o Noroeste argentino, como cuando no se asignó previamente ningún grupo. En general, el análisis discriminante muestra un alto porcentaje de correcta clasificación de las poblaciones en los grupos en los que fueron asignadas inicialmente, lo que refleja la fuerte estructura geográfica de la variación genética. El análisis filogeográfico reveló vínculos genéticos con otras poblaciones del Noroeste argentino, particularmente de Jujuy y Salta y, en menor medida, con poblaciones del Gran Chaco. Los resultados obtenidos a partir de esta investigación reflejan la historia de una población surgida principalmente en torno al ingenio azucarero y a partir del aporte migratorio desde regiones vecinas de Argentina y países limítrofes, hecho que aseguró la disponibilidad de mano de obra a través del tiempo y condujo a la formación de una población con gran diversidad genética.; The present work aims to contribute to the knowledge of the population history of La Esperanza, Jujuy, on the basis of the study of the diversity and relative distribution of mitochondrial DNA lineages, on a population sample of 94 individuals. The genetic affinities between the maternal lineages found in La Esperanza and 43 South American populations were analyzed using the data obtained from the literature. The results show that Native American lineages constitute 100% of the sample, with B2 being the most frequent haplogroup (45%), followed by D1, A2 and C1 with a contribution of 22%, 17% and 16%, respectively. Finally, only one individual presented the D4h3a lineage. Interpopulation distance analysis reveals low distance values with Quechuas from Huancavelica, Avá Guaraní and Pilagá Quechua samples. The discriminant analysis shows, in general, a high percentage of correct classification of the populations in the groups to which they were previously assigned, which reflects the strong geographical structure of genetic variation. In the case of La Esperanza, the classification placed this sample in the Chaco group, both when it was previously assigned to the Chaco or Northwestern Argentina groups, as well as when no group was previously assigned. The phylogeographic analysis showed genetic links with other Northwestern Argentina populations, particularly from Jujuy and Salta and, to a lesser extent, with Gran Chaco populations.&#13;
The results obtained from this research reflect the history of a population that emerged mainly around sugar mills and from the migratory contribution from neighboring regions of Argentina and bordering countries, which ensured the availability of labor over time and led to the formation of a population with high genetic diversity.
