Revision
Matrix systems
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
In this work the evolution of the matrix systems referred to formulation, conception,
design, and their biopharmaceutical properties is reviewes. These systems allow the delay and regulate the
liberation of the drugs they contain, according to processes which in general follow the diffusion laws. Inert, hydrophilic
and lipidic matrices are mentioned, emphasizing the use of saturated polyglycolysed glycerides which
modulate the release and improve the bioavailability of the active principles.

Articulo
The redox balance in diabetic and it complications
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
Las investigaciones apuntan a que el estado redox celular pudiera estar jugando un papel central en la diabetes y el síndrome metabólico asociado.; Recent evidence is reviewed indicating increased oxidative damage in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as deficits in antioxidant defense system. All forms of diabetes are characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia and the development of the diabetes-specific microvascular disease is a leading cause of blindness, renal failure and nerve damage; diabetes-accelerated atherosclerosis leads to increased risk of myocardial infartation, stroke and limb amputation. The oxidative stress has been implicated in pathogenesis of diabetic complications. Four main molecular mechanisms have been implicated in glucose-mediated vascular damage. All of them seem to reflect a single hiperglycaemia-induced process of overproduction of superoxide by the mitochondrial electron-transport chain. It is argued that cellular redox status should now be regarded as central player in diabetes and the metabolic syndrome.

Comunicacion
Descriptive analyis of the psychotropic prescriptions in a population of Mar del Plata city (Argentina) from February 2000 to February 2001
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
179,660 recipes were processed. The 17.08% had psychotropic drugs (3.53% been prescribed by psychiatrists and 13.55% by physicians). 35552 units was the number of the psychotropic drugs, of which benzodiazepine drugs represented 64.58%, antidepressants 23.61%; antipsychotics 7.52% and hypnotic drugs 4.29%. Physicians showed a broad prescription prevalence for benzodiazepine, antidepressants and hypnotic drugs. Psychiatrists showed a broad prescription prevalence for haloperidol-antipsychotic and narrow prescription prevalence for rysperidone and other atypical drugs. In the 1995-1996 period, 15.8% of the recipes was referred to psychotropics. The comparison of that information with the current profile shows a change towards the preference of the benzodiazepine group, observing a noticeable increase of clonazepam, flunitrazepam and the ISRS antidepressant prescriptions.

Articulo
Enteric coating fails in pantoprazol tablets
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
Resistance of the enteric coating in this media was studied in 5 commercial marks of PP 40 mg named I-V. The samples were tested according to the USP 26 and FA 7 release test subjecting them to the acid stage of the test. Visual inspection (documented by photography) showed cracks in the coatings of I and V. The remanent PP in the tablets was assessed by a stability indicating HPLC method. Obtained PP percentages were 73.88 ± 5.99 y 86.47 ± 11.25 for I and V respectively. From that result, it could be inferred that 26.12 y 13.53% of PP was released or discomposed during the acid stage. Therefore they didn?t satisfy codified requirements. In real situations, that loss would be associated to a potency decrease of the product, whose efficacy could be seriously compromised.

Pantoprazole (PP) is a drug highly instable in acid media currently formulated as delayed release tablets. In real situations, that loss would be associated to a potency decrease of the product, whose efficacy could be seriously compromised.</dc:description>

Articulo
Optimisation of the enantioseparation of ketamine by using capillary electrophoresis and B-carboxy-
cyclodextrins
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
An analytical method to know the centesimal composition of the enantiomers of ketamine in injections by using capillary electrophoresis and carboxy-β-cyclodextrin as quiral selector was developed. In order to enhance the enantioseparation, the resolution was selected as objective function. A screening Placket- Burman design was used to evaluate main factors. Once the main factors were identified, a central composite design was built. It was employed in the surface response methodology. The final conditions using silica capillars were: a) voltage: 15 kV, b) pH: 5.20 (with a buffer phosphate solution), c) methanol: 30% (v/v), d) carboxy-β- cyclodextrin concentration: 2,0% p/v. The detection wavelength employed was 206 nm. Eventually, the method was applied on commercial samples.

Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
Por otro lado, se observó variación en la presencia de los metabolitos en dependencia de la época de toma de muestras para las especies de estudio.; Three species of the Erythroxylum: E. areolatum L., E. suave Lunan and E. havanense Jacq., were selected in order to search for new bioactive compounds The phytochemical composition of the leaves collected in different times and in several places of Pinar del Río Province, Cuba, was studied. It was found agreement between the composition of the metabolites studied (alkaloids, flavonoids, fenoles-tannins, triterpenes-steroids) for each species and the information reported in the literature. A relationship between the period of the year and the presence of certain compounds was also observed for the species studied.

Articulo
Evaluation of carbamazepine:β-Cyclodextrin complexation and solid complex obtainment in laboratory and production scale
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
The main limitation of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) use has been its low solubility compared to other cyclodextrins. Nevertheless, βCD presents lower costs and a high feasibility of industrial application in the production of tablets. With the objective to choose the condition for semi-industrial production of CBZ:βCD complexes, a factorial design was made. Following the selection of the conditions for complexation, complexes in solid state were produced by spray-drying in laboratory and production spray-dryers. The results obtained in the factorial design showed that the complexation can be performed at room temperature (25 °C) and during one day. The complex, in the solid form, obtained in the production spray-dryer yielded higher particle size (11.7 µm) compared to that obtained in the laboratory spray-dryer (< 3.4 µm).

Articulo
Preliminary comparative analysis of the acute toxicity and median lethal dose (LD50) of the fruit of the Brazilian black pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi) and black pepper (Piper nigrum L.)
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
A Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (pimenta-doreino
present paper, the acute toxicity of two species of pepper that are extensively used in Brazilian culinary was
compared. Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (Brazilian black pepper) is frequently found in supermarkets and other
commercial establishments sold as a spice and even fraudulently in place of Pipper nigrum L, in spite of the absence
of scientific papers determining whether it is innocuous or if there are risks for human consumption. For
this reason, growing concentrations (2-5 g.Kg-1 ) of the crude extracts of the fruit of Schinus terebinthifolius
Raddi and of Pipper nigrum L. were administered orally in a single dose to mice, in order to carry out their Hippocratic
Screening and determine the average lethal dose (LD50) by oral (per os) and intraperitoneal (ip) administration.
The LD50 by oral administration was estimated to be over 5 g Kg-1, whereas by ip administration the
LD50 values for Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi and Pipper nigrum L, were found to be 3.5 and 3.714 g.Kg-1, respectively.
In the first 12 h of the Hippocratic Screening, the species Pipper nigrum L. was shown to depress the
general activity parameters, response to touch, righting reflex and body tonus; reverting spontaneously in the first
24 h of observation. The results obtained show that both peppers have a low oral toxicity, when administered to
mice (5 g.Kg-1, per os) in doses which are 2.500 times greater that the daily human consumption of Pipper nigrum
L.

Articulo
Relative thermodynamic stability relationship between glybenclamide polymorphs
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
Forms number IV and II were obtained by recrystallization in organic solvents whilst I and III forms were found in commercial batches. Characterization was carried out by X-ray powder diffraction spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), IR absorption spectroscopy, dissolution assessments, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy. Thermodynamics relationships between polymorphs were studied and they were later applied to experimental results of glybenclamide system. Heat, entropy and transition temperature were calculated from melting data obtained by DSC. This work represents the first part of a number of studies addressed to clarify two problems involved with polymorphism a) to confirm the existence and b) to determine the relationship of the relative thermodynamic stability between polymorphs (monotropy or enantiotropy).

Four anhydrous crystalline forms for glybenclamide were found when its polymorphism was studied: based center monoclinic (polymorph IV), simple monoclinic (polymorph III), orthorhombic (polymorph II) and simple triclinic (polymorph I). This work represents the first part of a number of studies addressed to clarify two problems involved with polymorphism a) to confirm the existence and b) to determine the relationship of the relative thermodynamic stability between polymorphs (monotropy or enantiotropy).</dc:description>

Articulo
Evaluation of antitumoral activity of a fraction of water-soluble components of the edible mushroom pleurotus ostreato-roseus
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
and tested on NCI-H292 cell culture and in vivo Sarcoma 180. Non apparent toxic effect was observed
in cell culture. However, an increase on cell protein content was observed in treated cells indicating
a possible mitogenic effect. The group of treated mice showed clinical signals suggesting toxicity and have
mortality started earlier than non treated group. However, in the treated mice was verified a 41.96% reduction
on tumor. These results that suggest this water soluble fraction has a pharmacological potential in
tumor therapy and point to the necessity of further researches.

<i>Schinus longifolia</i> var. <i>longifolia</i> (Anacardiaceae): anatomy of the leaf and stem
Acta Farmacéutica Bonaerense; vol. 23, no. 2
The leaves are employed in folk medicine as expectorant and laxative, and the resin excreted by the stem is applied to soften hardness skin. In the present paper the objective was to study the anatomy of the leaf and the stem with the purpose to get micrographic characters permiting to recognise the fragmented samples of the species. The main differential traits were found in the leaves. They were the presence of anomocytic stomata type and their distribution, the stomatal index of 1.96% and 9.46% on the adaxial and abaxial surfaces, respectively; the presence and distribution of glandular and nonglandular trichomes, the dorsiventral mesophyll, and the crystals ordered into the palisade parenchyma and aleatory distributed into the spongy parenchyma.
