<title>A note on the statistical significance of changes in inequality</title>

This note illustrates how modern computer intensive tools like the bootstrap provide a simple and efficient way to compute interval estimates and standard errors for inequality measures. Additionally, the same methodology is used to implement a formal test of the null hypothesis of no changes in income inequality between two periods. Results are applied to the case of Argentina, where inequality varied substantially in the last decade, making crucial the issue of distinguishing sampling variability from true changes in the distribution of income. Our results show that the problem is not minor, since the observed changes un the Gini coefficients for several regions in Argentina are not statistically significant.

<description>Articulo

This paper examines the gold flows of Argentina in the years 1903-1913 with the purpose of determining if the disturbances of the gold flows were adjusted in a short period. It has also the purpose of studying the relationship among the interest rates of Great Britain and Argentina. The empirical results support the existence of a short adjustment process and that the gold flows of Argentina were under the influence of the rate of interest of London. A changing relation among the interest rates of both countries has been found.

The main contributions of this paper are the development of a new test of the stock market hypothesis and a new application of the tests for return predictability to the Buenos Aires Stock Market. In the first part, a survey of these tests is made, including, among others, the variance bound test, the test of cointegration between prices and dividends, the overshooting test, and the test of autocorrelation of the returns. Then, a new test is developed, called cointegration test between stock prices, based on the idea that if a market is efficient there should not exist open arbitrages that could give the basis for profitable trading rules. Finally, an empirical application to the Buenos Aires Stock Market is made. The results show suggestive evidence that undermine the joint hypothesis of market efficiency and constant returns.

<title>Pseudo equilibrios de expectativas: algunos ejemplos macroeconómicos</title>
<link>http://sedici.unlp.edu.ar:80/handle/10915/9180</link>
<description>Articulo
Económica; vol. 46, no. 1
This paper explores instances of coordination failures in intertemporal decisions. The context is one where agents try to interpret the behavior of others as it is revealed by market variables. The paper shows examples where, if agents postulate that market data necessarily result from actions based on correct expectations, it is possible that decisions predicated on inconsistent forecasts are sustained as temporary equilibria. In those states the individuals may find no reason to revise their current actions, as the values of observed market data seem consistent with their initial beliefs, even if these are mistaken. The examples show cases of "self-validated" states based on erroneous expectations: their existence derives from the way in which agents conjecture future "fundamental conditions" from the observation of current aggregate data, give their assumptions about how other individuals are forming their own forecasts. The "pseudo-equilibria" are not analogous to "self-fulfilling prophecies", since eventually expectations will be frustrated and plans revised.

<title>On search theory and customers</title>
<link>http://sedici.unlp.edu.ar:80/handle/10915/9179</link>
<description>Articulo
Económica; vol. 46, no. 1
This paper studies a simple model of decentralized exchange where consumers have to search for a seller that provides the services they want. Once a buyer finds one of these "good" stores, a customer relationship between the two develops. We study the factors on which the formation of this link depends and some of their properties and characteristics. We define a Customers Steady State Equilibrium and give conditions under which one of these exists. Finally, we show how these customer relationships impose a certain sluggishness on the economy as it responds to changes in the cost of production.
