Canine diestrous acromegaly
Analecta Veterinaria; vol. 21, no. 2
GH hypersecretion is induced by high plasmatic progesterone concentrations which characterize luteal phase of canine estrous cycle. This endocrine disorder is also caused by administration of exogenous progestins frequently used for estrous cycle suppression. Clinical signs of acromegaly consist of excessive muscular, bone and visceral growth and glucose intolerance. Affected bitches usually develop hypothyroidism and hyperadrenocorticism. Also, in successive estrous cycles, the risk of developing mammary neoplasia and cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex increases. Early spaying consti- tutes the best method for prevention and/or treatment of canine acromegaly. Full understanding of the alterations of GH secretion associated to estrous cycle will prevent permanent endocrine disorders in the bitch.

Ultrasonografía reproductiva en producción porcina

Revision
Reproductive ultrasound in pig production
Analecta Veterinaria; vol. 21, no. 2
Besides the absence of heat (non-return to oestrus) 21±3 days postmating/ artificial insemination, several other methods have been used for pregnancy diagnosis. Such methods include the use of Doppler and A or B-mode ultrasound. With Doppler or A-mode ultrasound, although the initial investment of purchasing the equipment is low, more "false positive" or "false negative" diagnosis are obtain and hence cannot be used before 30-35 days of gestation. In contrast, with B-mode ultrasound or real time ultrasonography (RTU), pregnancy diagnosis has more sensitivity and specificity and it can be done much earlier, around 18 to 22 days postmating, so can decide immediately of the future of nonpregnant sows: oestrus induction or culling. Gynecology B-mode ultrasonography is a useful tool in swine production for: 1) pregnancy diagnosis; 2) identification of uterine pathologies and 3) assessment of ovarian status and the presence of ovarian cysts. B-mode ultrasonography is an early and accurate pregnancy diagnosis that allows to make an early decision of the future of open sows: oestrus induction or culling and therefore to decrease the nonproductive days per sow per year in order to obtain better reproductive performance in swine herds.

<i>Gymnorhynchus gigas</i>: taxonomy, morphology, biology and sanitary aspects
Analecta Veterinaria; vol. 21, no. 2
In the present paper we realized an extensive revision of the cestode Gymnorhynchus gigas, parasite of the Ray's Bream (Black sea bream), one of the fish with the most number of consumers. This work is about all unknown until this moment in reference a its taxonomy, morphology, biology and sanitary interest. We are specially attention in the last aspect, because in the actually is very studied the pathogenicity of this parasite which in the beginning was considerate innocuous, at not be human parasite, but posterior studies has determined its possible implication in adversus reactions.

Emergency to resistance strains of <i>Campylobacter jejuni</i> isolates from raw retail poultry parts
Analecta Veterinaria; vol. 21, no. 2
The antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter jejuni strains obtained from carcasses and raw retail poultry parts were study in order to know their sensitivity from erythromycin and norfloxacin. Forty-two strains of Campylobacter biotype II of Lior were identified from 120 isolates (35%). Twenty-eight of these were screened for nalidixic acid resistance (30 mg disc). 71,4% of these selected strains were also erythromycin resistant by using disc diffusion method (13 mm) and MIC50 64 µg/ml, MIC90 128 µg/ml. All of them showed norfloxacin resistance by using both dilution agar MIC50 64 µg/ml, MIC90 64 µg/ml and diffusion agar method (10 µg disc). It was concluded that the high resistance of Campylobacter to erythromycin and norfloxacin registered from poultry products may be an important source of infection for human being to these emergent bacteria as well as their implications for the identifications of campylobacter, therapeutic and public health.

Enzootic bovine leukosis: evaluation of diagnostic techniques (AGID, I-ELISA, WB and PCR) in experimentally inoculated bovines
Analecta Veterinaria; vol. 21, no. 2
Two experiments were designed using a total of twelve two years old bovines (8 inoculated and 4 controls). The transmission of infection with Bovine Leucosis Virus (BLV) was made with blood of seropositive, asymptomatic bovines (5, 10 and 50 µl) using different ways (ID, SC, IM and EV). All animals were weekly monitored during four month and analyzed comparatively applying the diagnostic methods developed in our laboratory. Indirect ELISA (I-ELISA) : Antibodies at levels higher than cut off point was found between the 3rd and 6th postinoculation (PI) week. Immunodiffusion in agar (ID): All inoculated animals resulted positive between the 4th and 6th PI week. 40% of the animals kept weak positives until the 6th week. Western Blot (WB): The positive serums showed reactivity against the gp51 and the p24. No other proteins (gp30, p15, p12 and p10) were detected in any case. In 90% of inoculated bovines, the antibodies against the p24 were detected before (2nd- 4th PI week) than the antibodies against the gp51. PCR: a Nested-PCR was developed with primers for a stored segment of the env gen. In 75% of bovines provirus were detected 2 weeks PI. From the results of our study we can conclude that: 1) All inoculated animals (through any of the considered ways) made it positive in response to our techniques even those with the minimum blood volume (5 µl). 2) ID and I-ELISA tests are very useful in population studies, being the latter more sensitive. 3) The WB and PCR techniques are alternatives tests for cases requiring confirmation.

Minimum inhibitory concentration of tilmicosin and erythromycin against <i>Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae</i> field strains isolated in Argentina
Analecta Veterinaria; vol. 21, no. 2
The objective of the present study was the determination of tilmicosin and erythromycin's minimum inhibitory concentrations on 27 Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae field strains isolated in Argentina. Microdilution technique, according to guidelines of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS), Subcommittee on Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing, 1994 (M31-P), was applied. MIC for tilmicosin was 2 mg/ 50 ml, while CIM was 4 µg/ml, being the range 0,25 to 4 µg/ml. For erythromycin, MIC and CIM were 4 µg/ml, being the range 4 to 1 µg/ml. Minimum bactericidal concentration for tilmicosin was not uniform, being 4 µg/ml for 15 of the tested strains, 8 µg/ml for 10 strains and 16 µg/ml for the remaining two. All A. pleuropneumoniae strains tested in the present study were sensitive to tilmicosin, therefore its use on the treatment of pleuropneumonia can be advised. This is not true for erythromycin since bacterial susceptibility was low.
