Even though geographic origin data written down in historical documents allow us to make estimations of migration, the surnames found there are also useful in order to calculate the probable net migratory input in terms of new genes to the populations. The aim of this work was to analyze and to compare the results obtained by means of both kinds of data. The sources we utilized were: the Census of the year 1832 for Córdoba city and the database published by A Arcondo (1998), which was completed and corrected by the authors. The behaviour of the ethnic group of "noble" men and women was analyzed considering, on the one hand, the whole adult population and, on the other, the identified marriages, by estimating the migration through a genetic population model applied to the surnames distribution. Only to be compared to the former ethnic group, the above-cited analysis was made for the "pardo" population. The results showed that, in spite of the relatively scarce number of men in the Census, they evidenced more immigration, both through the higher proportion of trans-oceanic immigrants among them and the higher surname diversity and only once represented surnames percentage. Meanwhile, the highest migratory input belonged to the married "noble" population.

The aim of this article is to analyze throughout time the evolution of deceases and the causes of death by age and sex of the population Welsh of Gaiman, Province of Chubut, Argentine. The data were obtained from the Register of Deaths of Civil Archive of Rawson City, Chubut. The study was extended from 1892 to 1961 but for its description and analysis was divided into decades. 2013 deceases were registered, of which 1039 (49%) corresponded to the Welsh and their descendents and represent an average of 14.6 deaths per year. A male overmortality (59%) was detected, which would be expected in a colonizing population with excess of males. An increase throughout time , of the age average of deceases was observed. The data show an improvement of the socioeconomic and health conditions of the population. The infantile and the birth mortality represent the 20% and 11% respectively of the deceases. The data reveal a transition from a mortality generated by illness of exogenous nature to the other of endogenous causality. When we compared our data with those of the Province of Chubut and those of our country, we observed in all cases a decrease in the rate of mortality, although in Gaiman this decrease was more significant probably due to the attention that the community has paid to education and health.

A su vez, se evidenció una neta diferenciación entre Córdoba y las restantes series.; Recent archaeological research on pre-Hispanic agricultural societies of the current territory of the province of Córdoba (Argentina) shows a process of diversification and cultural differentiation. The way of life of the South and Plains regions widely differed from that observed in the North-East, North-West and Traslasierra regions. In this work, by means of the analysis of non metric cranial traits, we investigated if that cultural differentiation was associated to observable patterns of biological variation. Different techniques employed (cluster analysis, spatial autocorrelation, multi response permutation procedure) gave evidence of a significant regional differentiation. Inter-population comparisons with samples from other regions of Argentina, based on data reported in the literature, reveal that the pre-Hispanic inhabitants of Córdoba were biologically more related to the Patagonian and Tierra del Fuego groups, than to the North-East and North-Western populations. On the other hand, the analysis shows a clear differentiation between Córdoba and the other series.

<link>http://sedici.unlp.edu.ar:80/handle/10915/5969</link>
<description>Articulo
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 7, no. 2
The aim of the present study is to assess the nutritional status of children from three Argentinian cities with different urban-environmental complexity, in the context of nutrition transition. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 5190 schoolchildren of both sexes aged 4.0-14.9 years, who attend to public schools of La Plata and Brandsen (Province of Buenos Aires) and General Alvear (Province of Mendoza). Weight and height were measured and body mass index (BMI) calculated. Data were standardized to z- score deviations from the 50th centile of the NHANES I and II reference. A z-score of less than ?2 DS was used as the cut-off point to determine the prevalences of low weight-for-age, low height-for-age and low weight-for-height. IMC values equal or higher than 85th centile and lower than 95th centile were employed to assess overweight. Obesity was defined by IMC values higher than 95th centile. Comparisons between prevalences were performed by means of Chi2 analysis. Data were processed by SPSS 7.0 program. The results agree with those found in other Latin American populations characterized by high levels of stunting and low levels of wasting. All the cities presented the coexistence of undernutrition and obesity. Nevertheless, the differences suggest variable stages of nutrition transition: La Plata and Brandsen would exhibit a more advanced stage, with high prevalences of undernutrition and obesity, while General Alvear would reflects the least advanced stage of such transition.

<link>http://sedici.unlp.edu.ar:80/handle/10915/5968</link>
<description>Articulo
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 7, no. 2
Esto plantea un marco de análisis más complejo y la necesidad de considerar otros parámetros que detallen mejor la historia de vida de los individuos.; One of the possible strategies that would maximize the reproductive success of a female mammal would be to adjust the sex ratio of her offspring. As Trivers &amp; Willard proposed in 1973, if the variance in reproductive success in one sex is greater than in the other, and if this success is determined by the physical condition of the mother, then, those emales who are in good condition would benefit by having offspring of the sex of greater variance. The objective of this study was to evaluate this hypothesis in a rural population of Toba Amerindians of the province of Formosa, Argentina. The hypothesis would predict that mothers in better condition (younger, with fewer offspring) would have a greater proportion of boys than those who are in more precarious condition (older, multiparous). A total of 154 reproductive histories yielding 635 were used to analyze sex ratios in this population. Sex ratios were analyzed in relation to maternal age, parity order, and interbirth interval. Our results show that the proportion of boys born increase with maternal age, parity order, and interbirth interval. These findings contradict, in part, the working hypothesis. However, it is possible that the variables analyzed are not good proxies for maternal condition. This sets the stage for a more complex framework of analysis and for the need to consider other parameters that fit more tightly the life history of the individuals.

<link>http://sedici.unlp.edu.ar:80/handle/10915/5967</link>
<description>Articulo
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 7, no. 2
As part of an interest in assessing the behavior of birth-weight (BW) in wide-ranging ecological contexts, this study analyzes the regional variation of this anthropometric variable in Santa Cruz province and its relation to gestational biological factors. Santa Cruz province presents two large environmental areas: Andean and Plateau-Coastal ones. BW data proceeded from Statistical Reports on Born Alive Babies (for the 1990-1999 period) (n = 39632). Variables taken into account were birth weight, birth place, sex, gestational age, maternal age and parity. BW interregional differences, expressed by means of variance analysis, were not statistically significant. Sexual dimorphism was observed in both regions. BW did not show statistically significant differences in parity or maternal age. Differential behavior was observed in the fetal growth pattern in both sexes between regions characterized because as from 37 gestation weeks, BW weekly average increase was bigger in the Andean Region than in the Plateau-Coastal one. Results obtained in the present study would evidence that geographical and weather characteristics of the two main ecological units of this province would not influence BW variation. Probably the relative and favorable homogeneity of the provincial socioeconomic capacity contributes to diminish the effect of adverse weather conditions typical of this province. Interregional differences in fetal growth pattern might be due to various biological and environmental factors to be explored with a sample design that may allow verifying this finding and obtaining the information required to explain it.

Interregional differences in fetal growth pattern might be due to various biological and environmental factors to be explored with a sample design that may allow verifying this finding and obtaining the information required to explain it.</dc:description>
