External auditory exostosis in adult individuals from late Holocene (1500 ap - 19th century) in Southern Patagonia
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 21, no. 1
It is particularly associated with cold water exposition, but also with low environmental temperatures, wind, trauma, and repetitive infections. Its prevalence has been scarcely studied in past human populations from Southern Patagonia. The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of EAE and its possible relationship to region, sex, age-at-death, and economic strategies in a sample of 24 skulls of Late Holocene adult individuals (18 males, 5 females, and 1 undetermined) from Southern Patagonia. Presence, size, location, form, and laterality of the EAE were determined. In the studied sample, 79.2% (n=19) of individuals were affected by EAE, bilateral in 56.3 % (9/16), of small and middle size (73.7% and 21.1%, respectively). EAE was more frequent in males and middle adults, without presenting significant differences. Similar prevalence of EAE was observed in individuals from coastal and inland regions. However, this was more pronounced in individuals with a terrestrial diet (58.3%), in particular, those from Santa Cruz/Magellan region (33.3%) and from the north of Tierra del Fuego (25%); no significant differences were found with respect to those from southern Tierra del Fuego. These first results suggest the combination of environmental factors (cold water, wind, and low environmental temperature) as possible causes for the high frequency of EAE in these individuals from Southern Patagonia. However, further research including larger samples is necessary.

21, no. 1
Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCLP) is a congenital malformation that shows the characteristics of a multifactorial pathology. In order to describe the genetic predisposition to this disorder, NAT genes were analyzed with special interest since they codify for N-acetyltransferases, the enzymes responsible for the biotransformation of arylamines, hydrazine drugs and a great number of toxins and carcinogens present in diet, cigarette smoke and the environment. The allelic transmission of NAT2 that determines the slow acetylator phenotype in 174 trios (case-mother/father) from ECLAMC (Latin American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations) maternities in Argentina was evaluated. The *4, *5B, *6, and *7 variants by PCR-RFLP were analyzed. A higher risk for the 5B*5B* genotypes (OR=2. 24; p=0.050) was found, at the expense of the cases from Patagonia, without the influence of the maternal genotype.; El labio leporino con o sin paladar hendido (NSCLP) es una malformación congénita que presenta las características de una patología multifactorial.

Accumulated degree days (ADD) and sequence of disarticulation in the reconstruction of postmortem interval (PMI). A contribution to forensic taphonomy
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 21, no. 1
This paper presents the results on the relationship between the disarticulation sequence of Equus caballus) and the postmortem interval (PMI). For this purpose, we proposed the linear regression equation developed by Megyesi, Nawrocki and Haskell (2005) in which the local temperature data and state of conservation of Equus caballus are used to obtain the ADD (accumulated degree (°C) days) and infer the PMI. The use of forensic comparative data on animal and human remains recovered in other environmental contexts allows us to conclude that, despite the isomorphism between different species, local factors, mainly temperature, may produce a significant delay in the sequence of disarticulation of Equus caballus during the first seven months postmortem. Although this study is preliminary and further research at regional and microregional level is required, it can be concluded that there are no significant differences between the PMI expected, derived from Megyesi’s equation, and the real PMI, so this type of measurements can be expected to be applied in discrete contexts in which environmental variables are identified and quantified.

Body proportions, general and abdominal obesity in adolescents from Córdoba, Argentina
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 21, no. 1
We analyzed the prevalence of general and abdominal obesity (AO) in school adolescents with different body proportions, from the city of Córdoba, Argentina. This is a cross-sectional study which included 614 adolescents (11-18 years old, mean age 13,9±2,1, 51.8% girls). Data were obtained from three public high schools of Córdoba during the period 2007-2014. Body proportion was estimated via the sitting-height ratio (SHR=sitting height/total height x 100), obtaining standardized sex- and age-specific Z scores, and quartiles (Q1-4) of these values. Overweight and obesity were calculated from the body mass index (BMI=weight(kg)/height(m)2], and were defined according to the references provided by the World Health Organization, obtaining sex- and age-specific Z scores. AO was determined using the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR=waist circumference / height); AO was established when WHtR≥0.5. In general, it was observed that, compared with individuals with lower SHR, those with higher SHR (with relatively shorter legs) have higher mean BMI and WHtR Z scores, together with a higher prevalence of overweight, general obesity and AO. While this pattern is statistically significant in girls, it is also found in boys, although less markedly and without reaching statistical significance. Considering the adverse effects of obesity on the current and future health of adolescents, individuals with high levels of SHR should be given special attention in nutritional and growth studies.

<title>Cervical arthritis, C3-C7, from an identified osteological collection</title>
<link>http://sedici.unlp.edu.ar:80/handle/10915/71867</link>
<description>Articulo
Artritis cervicales, C3-C7, en una colección osteológica documentada
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 21, no. 1
Osteoarthritis on the cervical vertebrae, C3-C7, accumulates as a function of age, life style, diet and severity of long-term skeletomuscular stress. However, the degree to which age (older adult and elderly) and sex differences impact on the manifestation of osteoarthritis remains difficult to assess because of the variability of biological aging and the lack of discrete post-reproductive age categories. The aim of this investigation was to score the degree of osteophytic marginal lipping, porosity and eburnation on the cervical vertebrae of identified individuals from the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection of the Forensic Anthropology Center of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA, to address whether the expression of osteoarthritic features differs (1) between older adults, 50-55 years, and elderly adults, 70-76 years, within each sex; (2) between both sexes of the same William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection age category; and (3) between the sexes regardless of age. Osteological remains included were accessioned between 2000 and 2010 to reflect contemporary variation, and only C3 to C7 were scored given the distinctions in morphology and function of the atlas and axis. The vertebrae were separated by number and analyzed using Mann-Whitney U tests. Osteoarthritic features are generally more severe in males compared to females although eburnation is elevated in older females (50-55 years) compared to their elderly counterparts (70-76 years). Both sexes show an accumulation of osteoarthritic features as a consequence of advancing age. However, sex differences between elderly adults (70-76 years) are less extreme compared to when all females and males are considered regardless of age.; La osteoartritis en las vértebras cervicales, C3-C7, se acumula debido a la edad, el estilo de vida, la dieta y la gravedad del estrés esqueletomuscular a largo plazo.

Genetic structure in Traslasierra valley. Analysis of Alu insertions
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 21, no. 1
The genetic diversity of human populations in central Argentina is the result of a process of migratory movements and admixture, after five centuries of contact between Native Americans and migrants, mainly from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. These historical and demographic events were not homogeneous; rather, they showed differences related to the environmental, economic, and political conditions of each sub-region. In this work we studied the genetic structure of Traslasierra Valley from the analysis of 8 Alu insertions (PV92, FXIIIB, APO, TPA25, ACE, A25, B65, and D1). Our objective is to contribute to the knowledge of its recent evolutionary history, mainly in relation to migratory patterns and the possible existence of consanguinity, using methodologies of anthropological genetics research. The sample examined included 97 individuals from several localities, mostly rural, and was divided into three subsamples, according to the north-south orientation of the valley. The results revealed the lack of differentiation between subsamples and a significant deficit of heterozygotes in 7 of the 8 markers used Local (FIS) and total (FIT) inbreeding coefficients, which measure the increase of homozygosis due to consanguineous mating, show positive and statistically significant values, both in the total population and in each of the subpopulations. The results confirm the existence of inbreeding, previously estimated indirectly by isonymy, marital distance, and other biodemographic estimators. Although five of the Alu insertions showed highly significant differences between continental groups, the estimation of genetic ancestry does not reflect the contribution of parental populations to the population’s gene pool, as expected from evidence obtained from uniparental and autosomal markers, or from recent migration history.

Dietary transition in native populations of Northern Tierra del Fuego during the Salesian missionary period: an isotopic approach
Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica; vol. 21, no. 1
Historical sources suggest that the natives living there underwent marked dietary changes with respect to the hunter-gatherers of the area. The change can be characterized by a large increase in the consumption of flour, rice, potatoes, and sugar, in replacement of guanaco, as their main food source. Our objective is to evaluate the dietary transition experienced by the inhabitants of the mission through the analysis of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen on bones (collagen, apatite) and teeth (dentin, enamel) of 23 individuals exhumed from the cemetery. The δ15N values in collagen (δ15Nc), and δ13C values both in collagen (δ13Cc) and in apatite (δ13Ca) of samples from the cemetery were lower than the values published for the region in pre-contact periods. Within the cemetery, the δ15Nc, δ13Cc and δ13Ca values were lower than those of δ15Nd (dentin) and δ13Ce (enamel), but there were no differences between δ13Cc and δ13Cd values. The δ15Nd and δ13Cd values were significantly lower than the isotope values of collagen for pre-contact periods. The results are consistent with the hypothesis raised by historical sources and suggest an imbalance in the diet, with a higher proportion of carbohydrates and a lower proportion of animal proteins in the inhabitants of the mission in comparison with the hunter-gatherers of Tierra del Fuego of pre-contact periods.
