La idea de América Latina: fundamentos políticos e intelectuales de un concepto en permanente transformación

Abstract

La idea de América Latina, como marca identitaria y campo de análisis, ha ido mutando a lo largo de la historia construyendo diferentes configuraciones tanto simbólicas como territoriales. En cada momento histórico, distintos estudios reflexionaron sobre su utilidad. En ese marco, la pregunta central de este trabajo es definir qué elementos perduran para que dicho nombre siga siendo de vital trascendencia en la actual configuración global y regional. Como hipótesis se plantea que, en tanto definición política antes que territorial o lingüística, su persistencia continuará mientras los principales ejes de las identidades nacionales se estructuren en el par autonomía-desarrollo, es decir, desde una posición periférica frente al poder global.

The idea of Latin America, as an identity brand and field of analysis, has been mutating throughout history, constructing different symbolic and territorial configurations. At each historical moment, different studies reflected on its usefulness. In this framework, the central question of this work is to define what elements persist so that this name continues to be of vital importance in the current global and regional configuration. As an hypothesis, it is proposed that, as a political rather than territorial or linguistic definition, its persistence will continue as long as the main axes of national identities are structured in the autonomy-development pair, that is, from a peripheral position in the face of global power.
