Massive stars are of fundamental importance in the Universe. They are fascinating objects, but they are also the only ones (as far as we know) capable of producing the atoms that make up all living things. Oxygen in water, phosphorus in nucleic acids, calcium in bones, and sodium, which is involved in cell metabolism and muscle contraction, were all created in massive stars. Without massive stars, life could not exist as we know it. In this article, we will try to explain how these chemical elements are formed and then released into the interstellar medium, where other stars, their planetary systems, and, eventually, living organisms, human beings and even astronomers, are born. And how can astronomers claim that we all have within us a little of a massive star.
