This study examines how pictorial aesthetics in Peru transformed from costumbrista to romantic following the country’s independence in the first half of the 19th century. It looks at the work of both foreign artists, such as Juan Mauricio Rugendas and Raymond Monvoisin, and local artists, including Pancho Fierro and Francisco Laso. The image of the ‘tapadas’ is part of the nation’s new iconography, alongside biblical references such as those related to the figure of Tamar.
