During the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, there was a significant growth in the production of drawing manuals in Spanish for schoolchildren in the Hispanic American region. These texts, to varying degrees, dealt with linguistic, technical-theoretical, and historical aspects, as well as reflections on artistic work.
The aim of this article is to present part of our research on drawing books published by artists in Buenos Aires between 1880 and 1940. We postulate that these manuals, as artist’s didactic writings, were part of their strategies for insertion, visualization and legitimization of their profession and artistic production. We also propose theoretical-methodological paths for their investigation.
