The objective of the research was to describe the modifications in the microstructure of dental enamel produced by a state-of-the-art self-etching adhesive system for composites. Enamel prisms, Hunter-Schreger bands, Retzius lines, and ridged enamel structures were considered. Samples were prepared from longitudinal crown sections, embedded in acrylic resin, and bonded with non-acid-etched universal resin, then rinsed with alcohol. The acid-etching patterns were used for analysis, and a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) system (ESEM LIMF-FI) was used for observation. Demineralization of the prisms was observed, exhibiting different etching patterns (type I, type II, type III), and a deepening of the Retzius lines was identified, making them more visible or distorted by the chemical action of the adhesive system. We conclude that the effect of self-etching adhesive systems on the microstructure of dental enamel is expressed with different acid etching patterns according to the organization of the prisms in the different areas of the tissue.
