Comentarios a Cicerón, <i>De Divinatione</i> I, 47 (El suicidio de Calano)

Abstract

En este artículo se indagan las relaciones entre la India, Grecia y Roma durante el período helenístico, específicamente desde la expedición de Alejandro hasta la tardía república romana. A partir del análisis del pasaje citado, que habla del suicidio de un asceta indio en la pira cuando Alejandro emprendió el retomo desde la India, estudiamos la posibilidad de que en el discurso que Cicerón pone en boca de ese personaje haya ideas originarias de la India. También analizamos el papel que juegan en el discurso las referencias a la literatura griega. Por último, contemplamos la posibilidad de que no existan en el texto ideas indias, y, en ese caso, intentamos definir el lugar que ocupaban la India y las ideas que se le atribuían en la filosofía de griegos y romanos.

This paper deals with the relations between India, Greece and Rome during the Hellenistic period, specifically from Alexander's expedition up to the late Roman republic. From the analysis of the mentioned passage, which speaks about the suicide of an Indian ascetic in the pyre when Alexander carne back from India, we study the possibility that in the speech Cicero gave to this character there are original ideas from India. We also analyze the role that references to Greek literature play in the speech. Lastly, we consider the possibility that Indian ideas do not exist in the text, and, in this case, we try to define the place India and the ideas about this country had in the philosophy of Greeks and Romans.
