El uso y abuso del término <i>óchlos</i> en Tucídides

Abstract

En griego antiguo existen al menos cinco términos que definen la masa, la muchedumbre y la multitud. Uno de ellos es ὄχλος, concepto nacido en el siglo V a.C. el cual es utilizado de manera reiterativa por Tucídides como un tendencioso sinónimo de δῆμος. A partir del análisis de algunas de las dieciocho menciones al término ὄχλος en su obra, es posible reafirmar el poderoso efecto político de este concepto con el fin de demostrar, una vez más, el fuerte componente antidemocrático en su obra.

In ancient Greek there are at least five terms that define the mass, the crowd and the multitude. One of them is ὄχλος, a concept born in the 5th Century B.C. which is used repeatedly by Thucydides as a biased synonym for δῆμος. From the analysis of some of the eighteen mentions of the term ὄχλος in his work, it is possible to reaffirm the powerful political effect of this concept in order to demonstrate, once again, the strong anti-democratic component in his work.
