Conocimientos y significados atribuidos al VIH en jóvenes mapuche

Abstract

El objetivo de este estudio es describir los conocimientos y actitudes sobre el VIH-sida en jóvenes pertenecientes al pueblo Mapuche de Chile. Este estudio se basó en un enfoque de investigación cualitativo y el método de “grupo de discusión” se utilizó para recolectar los datos. Los resultados muestran que los jóvenes mapuches tienen un conocimiento general relativo del VIH y presentan actitudes favorables hacia las personas con VIH. Sin embargo, algunos participantes poseen ideas erróneas sobre los primeros grupos infectados. Informaciones transmitidas por representaciones falsas arraigadas en creencias populares y por la cobertura mediática que dieron los medios de comunicación de la época al VIH. Las informaciones falsas u erróneas han sido factores que ha ayudado a la discriminación y el aislamiento social de las personas con VIH. Aún se necesitan más investigaciones en jóvenes mapuches para dilucidar con mayor claridad su comprensión y comportamiento hacia el VIH.

The objective of this study is to describe the knowledge and attitudes about HIV in young people belonging to the Mapuche people of the country of Chile. This study was based on a qualitative research approach and the “focus group” method was used to collect the data. The results show that young Mapuche people have a relative knowledge of HIV and have favorable attitudes towards people living with HIV. However, some participants have misconceptions about the first infected groups. Information transmitted by false representations rooted in popular beliefs and by the media coverage given by the way of communication of that time to HIV. False or erroneous information have been factors that have contributed to discrimination and social isolation of people living with HIV. More research is still needed in the young Mapuche people to clarify their understanding and behavior towards HIV.
