Civilización y barbarie

Abstract

Este artículo histórico traza el devenir de la barbarie arquitectónica y urbanística, a partir de un diagnóstico basado en los orígenes históricos de la literatura nacional que se remonta a 1837 y evolucionan en la historiografía de la denominada Generación de 1880. El estudio de la modernidad urbanística y del hábitat doméstico en Argentina centrada en la mirada del centro político, sobre la evolución del bárbaro rancho (primer grado de barbarie) del gaucho y su transformación en el "conventillo" del inmigrante proletario (segundo grado de barbarie), versus el civilizado palacio francés de la oligarquía aristocrática (burguesía). Las oleadas de civilización y barbarie se analizan con su correspondiente diseño de interiores y un mueble en particular: la silla. Este síntoma de la pobreza estructural (barbarie habitacional), tiene su asiento en lo que los filósofos, historiadores, literatos e intelectuales de las Ciencias Sociales latinoamericanas en general venían advirtiendo hace tiempo con la entrada de cierta parte de América (sur y centro) en la Edad Moderna (conquista capitalista y cultural).

The objective of this brief historical essay is to trace, in a summarized way, the evolution of architectural and urbanistic barbarism, based on the historical origins of the national literature that goes back to 1837 and evolve in the historiography of the so called 1880 Generation. The study of urban modernity and the domestic habitat in Argentina is focused in the understanding of the evolution of the barbarian ranch (first degree of barbarism) of the gaucho and its further transformation into the “conventillo” of the proletarian immigrant (second degree of barbarism). Against this, appeared the civilized French palace of the aristocratic oligarchy (bourgeoisie). The waves of civilization and barbarism will be analyzed with their corresponding interior design and a piece of furniture in particular: the chair. This symptom of structural poverty (housing barbarism), has its basement in what philosophers, historians, writers and intellectuals of the Latin American Social Sciences in general had been warning with the entry of a certain part of America (south and center) into the Modern Age (capitalist and cultural conquest).
