Cartografía, cultura y poder: a propósito de las críticas al mapa bicontinental argentino (Ley 26651)

Abstract

El presente artículo analiza un conjunto de notas de opinión publicadas en los principales diarios argentinos (La Nación, Clarín, La Voz, Perfil y La Capital) a partir de la sanción de la Ley Nacional 26651 del año 2010, que estableció el mapa bicontinental como nueva cartografía oficial argentina. El tono fuertemente crítico predominante respecto del nuevo mapa incluye como común denominador cuestionamientos sobre dos dimensiones. Una, referida a aspectos técnicos centrados en los conceptos de escala e implantación de símbolos cartográficos que configurarían un país virtual antes que real. Y otra, con foco en las premisas ideológicas que sustentarían la nueva cartografía, vinculada al nacionalismo territorial de carácter retrógrado y enfermizo, según la terminología utilizada. Estos argumentos tuvieron gravitación en ámbitos de profesores de Geografía, que tendieron a resistirse a su utilización recurriendo a esas mismas consideraciones. El trabajo interpela en perspectiva epistemológica tales aseveraciones desde las herramientas de la geografía contemporánea en su giro político y cultural. Desde el horizonte teórico propuesto es posible generar una ruptura con la concepción de la cartografía asumida como mímesis de la realidad tanto como con el intento explícito de inscribir el mapa bicontinental dentro de una matriz política autoritaria.

This article analyzes a set of opinion pieces published in the main Argentine newspapers La Nación, Clarín, La Voz, Perfil and La Capital, from the enactment of national Law 26651 in 2010, that established the bicontinental map as the new Argentine official cartography. The strongly critical tone that predominates regarding the new map includes as a common denominator questions about two dimensions. On the one hand referring to technical aspects centered on the concepts of scale and implementation of cartographic symbols, that would configure a virtual country rather than a real one. On the other hand it focuses on the ideological premises that would sustain the new cartography, linked to territorialist nationalism of a retrograde and sickly nature, according to the terminology used. These arguments had gravitation on geography teachers who tended to resist their use, resorting to those same considerations. This analysis challenges such assertions from an epistemological perspective, bringing to bear the tools of contemporary geography in its political and cultural shift. From the proposed theoretical horizon it is possible to generate a rupture both with the conception of cartography assumed as a mimesis of reality and with the explicit attempt to inscribe the bicontinental map within an authoritarian political matrix.
