Determinantes de la inversión extranjera directa en Argentina, 1970-2019

Abstract

En el presente trabajo se revisa la evolución de los flujos de la inversión extranjera directa hacia la economía argentina entre los años 1970 al 2019 y para ello se construye una base de datos trimestral con las distintas modalidades de IED. El objetivo principal es identificar, a través de un análisis econométrico, los determinantes de la radicación del capital extranjero en Argentina. Los resultados sugieren que la entrada de IED a largo plazo se encuentra fuertemente relacionada con el nivel de actividad y el tamaño de la economía, así como también los flujos globales de IED, la apertura comercial y la actividad en el resto del mundo. Al segmentar la muestra por períodos históricos ((i) sustitución de importaciones, (ii) Convertibilidad y (iii) post Convertibilidad) la mayoría de las variables significativas a largo plazo dejan de serlo y cobran importancia la inflación, el tipo de cambio real y las elecciones presidenciales.

This paper examines the evolution of foreign direct investment flows towards the Argentine economy between the years 1970 and 2019 and to this end, a quarterly database with the different modalities of FDI is built. The main objective is to identify, through an econometric analysis, the determinants of the establishment of foreign capital in Argentina. The results suggest that long-term FDI inflows are strongly related to the level of activity and the size of the economy, as well as global FDI flows, trade openness, and activity in the rest of the world. When segmenting the sample by historical periods ((i) import substitution, (ii) Convertibility and (iii) post Convertibility) most of the significant long-term variables cease to be so and inflation, real exchange rate and presidential elections become relevant.
