500 Años de la Órden de los Teatinos: el origen de los clérigos regulares

Abstract

El año 2024 que transcurre conmemora el quinto centenario de la fundación de la primera orden de clérigos regulares, la cual, a pesar de conservar el título sin añadidos, rápidamente pasó a ser conocida como de los ‘teatinos’, en referencia a uno de sus fundadores, Juan Pedro Carafa, obispo de Chieti (en latín Theates). Este, junto a Cayetano de Thiene, Bonifacio de Colle y Pablo Consiglieri, los cuatro curiales y miembros del Oratorio del Amor Divino de Roma, en búsqueda de una respuesta activa a la situación crítica del clero durante el siglo XVI, decidieron vivir en común y profesar los Consejos Evangélicos. En el siguiente artículo nos aproximaremos al momento fundacional de la Orden de los Teatinos, por medio de documentos, crónicas y relatos de la época. El objetivo será el de indagar acerca de los orígenes de un estilo de vida que trajo la reforma del clero tan anhelada: la clerecía regular.

The year 2024 marks the fifth centenary of the foundation of the first order of regular clerics, which, despite retaining the title without additions, quickly became known as the 'Theatines' in reference to one of its founders, Juan Pedro Carafa, Bishop of Chieti (in Latin, Theates). Along with Cayetano de Thiene, Bonifacio de Colle, and Paolo Consiglieri, the four curial members of the Oratory of Divine Love in Rome, in search of an active response to the critical situation of the clergy during the 16th century, decided to live in common and profess the Evangelical Counsels. In the following article, we will approach the foundational moment of the Theatine Order through documents, chronicles, and accounts of the time. The objective will be to investigate the origins of a lifestyle that brought about the much-desired reform of the clergy: the regular clergy.
