A construção da figura das feiticeiras como identidades de gênero no universo do Tribunal do Santo Ofício português (século XVI)

Abstract

A Inquisição Portuguesa não iniciou a repressão à feitiçaria em Portugal, pois já era objeto de intensos debates teológicos e jurídicos, incluindo o caráter de foro misto característico desse delito. No entanto, a organização progressiva do tribunal durante o século XVI integrou a feitiçaria à lista de crimes investigados pelos inquisidores, embora o foro citado tenha permanecido. Este estudo investiga as trajetórias de algumas das mulheres processadas pelo Santo Ofício por esse delito, argumentando que elas não apenas vivenciavam as suas identidades de gênero de feiticeiras por meio da fama de feiticeiras, mas também ganharam reconhecimento social e construíram espaços de relativa autonomia. Essas mulheres incluem Brites Frazão, Ana Álvares, Margarida Lourenço e Maria Gonçalves.

The Portuguese Inquisition did not initiate the repression of witchcraft in Portugal; rather, the phenomenon had already been subjected to vigorous theological and juridical debates, encompassing the distinctive mixed jurisdiction characteristic of this transgression. Nevertheless, the evolving institutional framework of the tribunal during the 16th century assimilated witchcraft into the array of offenses investigated by inquisitors, notwithstanding the persistence of the aforementioned jurisdictional complexity. This inquiry delves into the trajectories of select women prosecuted by the Holy Office for this offense. The argument posited contends that these individuals not only embodied their gender identities as witches through the notoriety associated with witchcraft but also accrued social recognition, concurrently constructing spaces characterized by relative autonomy. Among the notable figures examined are Brites Frazão, Ana Álvares, Margarida Lourenço, and Maria Gonçalves.

La Inquisición portuguesa no inauguró la represión de la brujería en Portugal; más bien, el fenómeno ya había sido sometido a vigorosos debates teológicos y jurídicos, que abarcaban la jurisdicción mixta distintiva característica de esta transgresión. Sin embargo, la evolución del marco institucional del tribunal durante el siglo XVI asimiló la brujería al conjunto de delitos investigados por los inquisidores, a pesar de la persistencia de la complejidad jurisdiccional antes mencionada. Esta investigación profundiza en las trayectorias de mujeres seleccionadas procesadas por el Santo Oficio por este delito. El argumento planteado sostiene que estos individuos no sólo encarnaron sus identidades de género como brujas a través de la notoriedad asociada a la brujería, sino que también acumularon reconocimiento social, al mismo tiempo que construyeron espacios caracterizados por una relativa autonomía. Entre las figuras notables examinadas se encuentran Brites Frazão, Ana Álvares, Margarida Lourenço y Maria Gonçalves.
