La imagen de la muerte en la Dança general de la Muerte española y The Dawnce of Makabre inglesa (s. XV)

Abstract

El hecho de que el origen del subgénero de la Danza de la Muerte tenga relación directa con la Peste Negra es objeto de debate, pero se está de acuerdo en que los años posteriores a la gran peste europea fueron de gran agitación social. En el caso de España, a pesar de no conocerse mayores registros de la Peste Negra, sí existen referencias acerca de ella y podemos observar su influencia en la forma de considerar la idea de la muerte. Es ese el objetivo de este análisis comparativo de la Dança General de la Muerte, registro textual español temprano de la Danza (principios del siglo XV), conservado en un manuscrito de la Biblioteca del Real Monasterio de El Escorial; y la versión de la Danza que se encuentra en el MS Adicional 37049 (manuscrito cartujo inglés, c. 1460-1500). El objetivo final de este análisis es demostrar cómo, en su contexto devocional, estas representaciones no pretendían sembrar pánico frente a la inevitabilidad de la muerte y el decaimiento, sino aportar a que se enfrenten esas circunstancias con menos miedo y más esperanza.

The fact that the origin of the subgenre of the Dances of Death is directly related to the Black Death is subject to debate, but it is agreed that the years that followed said European plague were times of great social unrest. In Spain, there are few textual records of the Black Death, but there are some references to it which provide insight into its influence in the way the idea of death was considered. That is the goal of this comparative analysis of the Dança General de la Muerte, early Spanish record of the Dance (beginnings of the 15th century), kept in a manuscript of the Real Monasterio de El Escorial Library; and the version of the Dance found in the Add MS 37049 (English Carthusian manuscript, dated 1460-1500). The final aim of this analysis is to show how, in its devotional context, these representations were not meant to install fear in the face of inevitable death and decay, but to help its readers to face these circumstances with less fear and more hope.
