Corea ante el Tratado de Kanghwa y Ia cuestión de Ia modernidad

Abstract

Se habla de modernidad en términos que parecen definir una etapa delineada por categorías monolíticas y, aparentemente, sólidas que son el producto de esa tábula rasa que borró del mapa europeo decimonónico todo lo que se emparentaba con el Antiguo Régimen. En los estudios coreanos, la modernidad desciende de los barcos extranjeros que "arroparon" el ingreso de Corea en el marco de las relaciones capitalistas de producción a finales del siglo XIX. El eje central de este artículo será redimensionar la búsqueda de un debate serio y profundo en torno a la creación de categorías socio-históricas adecuadas para interpretar este período de la historia coreana.

Modernity is talked about in terms that would seem to define a period outlined by monolithic categories that are, in appearance, solid, stemming from the blank slate that effaced every aspect of the Ancien Régime from the 18th century European map. In the field of Korean studies, modernity arrives on the foreign ships that aided the entry of Korea into the framework of capitalist relations of production at the close of the 19th century. The focal point of this paper will be to stress the importance of fostering a serious and in-depth discussion of the creation of sociohistorical categories appropriate for the interpretation of this period of Korean history.
