Sheng

Abstract

Organo de boca. Su invención es atribuida al soberano chino Nyü-Kwa (ca. 2800 a.C). Se lo menciona desde el s. XII a.C, aunque no existen representaciones hasta el s. VI de nuestra era. Hay diferentes variedades, con distintos nombres, que se distinguen por su tamaño y por el número y función de los tubos. Usualmente, como en este caso, tienen diecisiete, realizados en bambú e insertados en un recipiente metálico (o de madera laqueada) en forma de pistero que reemplaza a la primigenia calabaza. El sheng se ejecuta sosteniendo el recipiente con las palmas de ambas manos mientras se sopla o aspira por el pico y se obturan simultáneamente varios de los orificios de digitación

Mouth organ. Its invention is attributed to the mythical Chinese sovereign, Nyu-Kwa (ca. 2800 a.C.). It is mentioned since the 12th c. a.C, although there are no representations until the 6th c. a.D. There are different varieties with different names, distinguished according to their size and the number and function of their pipes. Usually as in this case, the sheng is made of seventeen bamboo pipes inserted into a metal — or wooden lacquered — receptacle shaped like a feeding cup which replaces the original gourd. The sheng is played holding the receptacle with both palms while blowing or aspirating through the spout and the fingers simultaneosly covering several holes.
