“El azúcar se forma en el campo”

Abstract

Nos proponemos analizar el rol desempeñado por las agencias estatales en el proceso de modernización de la agricultura cañera en Tucumán. Centraremos nuestra atención en la labor desarrollada por el Departamento Nacional de Agricultura (convertido en Ministerio en 1898) y en el accionar de las oficinas públicas provinciales en la creación de instituciones educativas y experimentales como base para el desarrollo agroindustrial. Como complemento, estudiaremos la interacción entre el Estado y el sector privado (cañeros, industriales y personal científico involucrado en la actividad) frente a las reformas propuestas para incorporar la agricultura ‘científica’ en el espacio rural tucumano.

We propose to analyze the role played by state agencies in the sugar cane modernization process of Tucuman. We will focus on the work of the National Department of Agriculture (since 1898, Ministry of Agriculture) and the actions of the provincial government offices in the creation of educational and experimental institutions for agro-industrial development. As a complement, we’ll study the interaction between the state and the private agencies (sugarcane farmers, industrials and scientific staff involved in this activity) under the proposed reforms to incorporate 'scientific' agriculture in Tucuman´s rural areas.
