Del ojo al espectador

Abstract

Desde que René Huyghe destaca, en 1955, el paso de la civilización del libro a la civilización de la imagen y remarca la necesidad de cambiar los usos metodológicos de la historia del arte, se ha desarrollado una línea de pensamiento centrada en el espectador. Esta línea, que tuvo un auge considerado en las estéticas de los años sesenta, fue trasladada a partir de ese período a la historia del arte, gracias a una serie de estudios que hicieron del espectador el centro de la reflexión. En este artículo se realiza, entonces, un repaso por autores como Clement Greenberg, Michael Baxandall y Svetlana Alpers, quienes partieron del ojo, de la visualidad y de la cultura visual para desentrañar sus usos metodológicos en relación con las propuestas de la nueva historia del arte.

In 1955 René Huyghe emphasized the passage of the civilization of the book to the civilization of the image and the necessity to change the methodologies of art history. After this moment a line of thought based on the experience of the observer was developed. This thought, very important in the aesthetic theories of the ‘60s, was transferred to art history from the ‘70s onwards. Different authors have studied art history by putting the spectator in a preferential place. This paper studies authors like Greenberg, Baxandall and Alpers –who put the experience of the eye and the visual culture in the centre of their interests– in order to analyse their methodological uses in relation with the new methodologies given by the new art history.
