Grupos sanguíneos en restos momificados de una población prehispánica: "Las Pirguas" (Salta, Argentina)

Abstract

Entre los años 1969 y 1971, se realizaron excavaciones sistemáticas en los sitios arqueológicos de la serranía de Las Pirguas (Depto. de Guachipas, Pcia. de Salta, Argentina), a cargo del Dr. Alberto Rex González y la División Arqueología del Museo de La Plata. Del casi centenar de cavernas localizadas se excavaron seis, encontrándose allí restos humanos con fechados radiocarbónicos de 500 años d.C. La finalidad del presente estudio consistió en la determinación de sustancias grupoespecíficas ABO(H) en tejido blando momificado (piel y pelo), a partir de muestras de material provenientes de cinco de las seis cavernas excavadas. Para cumplir con ese objetivo, se procedió a: (1) estandarizar las técnicas de aglutinación mixta, inhibición de la aglutinación y elución, en piel y pelo actuales; (2) aplicar estas técnicas sobre muestras de un individuo, tomado al azar, de cada una de las cinco cavernas; y (3) comparar nuestros resultados respecto de otros estudios en restos prehispánicos de Sudamérica. De los cinco individuos estudiados, cuatro demostraron especificidad A y el restante no pudo ser tipificado. Estos resultados apoyarían la hipótesis acerca de la presencia del antígeno A en poblaciones precolombinas, y coinciden con estudios previos realizados por otros investigadores en restos prehispánicos sudamericanos.

Between the years 1969 and 1971, the archaeological sites located on «Las Pirguas» hills (Guachipas Department, Province of Salta, Argentina), were systematically excavated by Dr. Alberto Rex González and the Archaeology division from La Plata Museum. Of the almost one hundred caves discovered, six were studied, from which several human remains were exhumed and dated 500 AD. The aim of the present study was the determination of ABO(H) specific group substances in mummified soft tissue (skin and hair) from samples of five of the six excavated caves. To fulfill this objective, the following, was performed: (1) Standardization of the mixed agglutination, agglutination inhibition and elution tests in fresh skin and hair samples from controls; (2) application of these tests on one mummified remain, chosen at random, from each of the five caves, and (3) comparison of our results with those obtained for other South American pre-Hispanic remains. Presence of A substance specificity was detected in four out of the five studied specimens; results for the remaining mummy were inconclusive. These findings support the hypothesis that the A antigen is present in pre-Columbian populations, and are in agreement with previous studies by other researches on South American pre-Hispanic human remains.
