La historia de la música como cultura afirmativa

Abstract

En <i>Acerca del carácter afirmativo de la cultura</i> de 1937, Herbert Marcuse introduce una crítica a lo que entiende que es función de la cultura y del arte: la legitimación del orden social existente. Invirtiendo la ortodoxia marxista que hace de la cultura un <i>reflejo</i> de la infraestructura, Marcuse piensa que aquella puede <i>producir</i> las condiciones para que las desigualdades se perpetúen. A contrario sensu de los imaginarios sobre el arte culto, pensar la música como expresión universal del absoluto y forma inmanente puede, justamente, antes que oponerse, reafirmar y validar la inequidad alienada del mundo burgués capitalista. En el presente texto intentaremos trazar algunas relaciones entre la formulación marcusiana sobre la cultura afirmativa y los posibles roles de la historiografía musical hegemónica en la aceptación de lo existente.

In the 1937 essay <i>The Affirmative Character of Culture</i>, Herbert Marcuse introduces a critique of what he understands is a function of culture and art: the legitimization of the existing social order. Reversing the Marxist orthodoxy that makes culture a <i>reflection</i> of infrastructure, Marcuse thinks that culture can <i>produce</i> the conditions for the reproduction of inequalities. Quite contrary to the imaginary about high art, thinking about music as a universal expression of the absolute and immanent form can, rather than oppose, reaffirm and validate the alienated disparity of the bourgeois capitalist world. In this text we will try to draw some relationships between the Marcusian formulation on the affirmative culture, and the possible role of the hegemonic musical historiography in the acceptance of the existing.
