La integración de las poblaciones inmigrantes en Uruguay: elementos para el debate

Abstract

El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo reflexionar sobre las nuevas corrientes migratorias en Uruguay, el cual construye su mito fundacional como país de inmigrantes. El Uruguay se caracterizó por ser un país receptor de migrantes desde los inicios de su vida independiente, a partir de la década de 1960, en el marco de una crisis económica que se fue agudizando progresivamente, Uruguay dejó de ser un país de inmigración para convertirse en un país de emigración. A finales del S. XX comienzan a llegar las primeras corrientes inmigratorias provenientes de América del Sur que se suman a las tradicionales y constantes inmigraciones de Argentina y Brasil. En este contexto se reflexiona sobre los procesos inmigratorios actuales indagando sobre las percepciones tanto de los nativos como de los inmigrantes para identificar aspectos que puedan colaborar a un proceso de integración que respete y valore el aporte de la riqueza cultural.

The present work aims to reflect on the new migration flows in Uruguay, which builds its founding myth as a country of immigrants. Uruguay was characterized as a country that has been receiving migrants since the beginning of their independent life, beginning in the 1960s, in the context of an economic crisis that progressively worsened, Uruguay stopped being a country of immigration to become in a country of emigration. At the end of the 20th century, the first immigrant flows from South America began to arrive, in addition to the traditional and constant immigration from Argentina and Brazil. In this context, we reflect on current immigration processes, investigating the perceptions of both natives and immigrants to identify aspects that may contribute to an integration process that respects and values the contribution of cultural wealth.
