El paralelismo "Watergate - Sexgate"

Abstract

Enero de 1998 trajo consigo el inicio de un proceso mediático y político a través del cual ha fluido abundante y variada información sobre el llamado "sexgate" y sus posibles consecuencias. Fue entonces cuando apareció un abanico de opciones muy amplio donde, desde diferentes perspectivas, se intentaba predecir cuál sería el final de esta historia. El espectro de opiniones se iniciaba con quienes sostenían que nada iba a ocurrir y finalizaba con aquellos que argumentaban la existencia de elementos para un posible juicio político al Presidente William Clinton y su eventual sucesión por el Vicepresidente Gore. En ese marco, resurgieron las comparaciones con otros hechos que hicieron historia en la biografía política de los Estados Unidos. Así fue como "el caso Watergate" pareció renacer de los 70 para ser citado por doquier como el principal referente de lo que podría ocurrirle a Clinton.

January 1998 brought with it a media and political process throughout which diverse and varied information has flowed as regards the so-called "sexgate" and its possible consequences. It was at that point when an array of very different predictions as regards the ending of this story appeared on the scene. People s opinions ranged from those sustaining that nothing was going to happen, to those who asserted the existence of elements for a possible political impeachment to President Clinton and an eventual succession by Vice-president Gore. In this context, some compared these events with others which shaped American political history. It was in this way that the "Watergate case" reappeared to be cited as the main example of what could happen to Clinton.
