More than a hundred years ago, Florentino Ameghino stated that the construction of channels to drain the exceeding water during rainy periods, resulted in disadvantages for the Pampean plains, because they produced more economical damage than the flooding itself, if the storage of water to be used during dry periods, was not considered. This paper has the objective to show an example of the negative consequences produced by the construction of these channels on an area of the floodplainpaleoestuary complex in the Arroyo del Tala´s basin, Buenos Aires Province. One of the negative aspects produced by the drainage of a large swamp that acted as the base level of the Arroyo del Tala, implied the drawdown of the water table, disturbing the growth of vegetation used mainly in extensive farming. On the other hand, since flooding does not occur in space and time, the soil profile can gain water only from rainfall, causing the thickening of the aeration zone. Likewise, the reduction of flooding implied the reduction of nutrient deposition, increasing the discontinuity of their natural reposition.
