Las relaciones de dependencia en la Galia (siglos IV-VI)

Abstract

Hacia fines del siglo III y comienzos del siglo IV se produce en el imperio romano una reestructuración del Estado que tiene consecuencias importantes sobre el campesinado, en la medida en que el incremento de las exacciones fiscales se revela como una de las principales transformaciones que conlleva. Este cambio altera las relaciones entre campesinos y terratenientes a nivel local en la Galia. Entonces, las relaciones de patronazgo rural, que posiblemente existieran con anterioridad, se vuelven ostensiblemente opresivas, convirtiéndose en un vínculo que conduce a la pérdida de la propiedad y la caída en dependencia por parte del campesino que busca protección. Viene así a engrosar las filas de los coloni que ya había ido perdiendo derechos y libertades frente a los señores cuyas tierras trabajaban. Este proceso tiene un punto álgido en el siglo V, en el contexto de las invasiones germánicas y del posterior resquebrajamiento de la estructura política imperial. En este período, la presión del Estado y de los terratenientes sobre los campesinos se vuelve más intensa, forzando en algunos de estos últimos la huída hacia los nuevos territorios germanos o hacia las zonas controladas por las bagaudas. Finalmente, el siglo VI parece entrañar una cierta relajación de las relaciones de dependencia entre las aristocracias y los campesinos, en el nuevo marco estatal del reino merovingio.

Towards the end of the third and the beginnings of the fourth century takes place in the Roman Empire a reestructuration of he State that has important consequencies on the peasantry, as the growing fiscal levies are one of its major caracteristics. This transformation changes the relationship between peasants and aristocrats in Gaul. The rural patronage relationships -that possibly existed previously- become ties of an oppressive kind, caracterized by the loss of the property and the fall into bondage relationships by the peasants that look for protection. Hencefore, these peasants integrate in the growing group of coloni that had already started to lose rights and status before the lords whose lands they worked. This process has a peak in the fifth century, in the context of the germanic invasion and the colapse of the imperial structure. In this period, the pressure of both de State and the landlords over the peasants becomes more intensive, forcing some of them to fly to the new german territories and others to the regions controlled by de bacaudae. Finally, the sixth century seems to lead to a kind of relaxation in the bondage relationships between peasants and landlords in the new frame of the merovingian kingdom.
