The adoption of the term Neogene in the 19th century beyond European continental geology still deserves further research. This paper analyzes the South American path of the Neogene in the context of the ordering of the Neotropical Cenozoic Formations in the 1880s. It is argued that the classification of the Cenozoic in Argentina resulted from the combination of Eduard Suess’ ideas, the geological time table suggested in Viena, and the local controversies linked to the micropolitics of Argentinean scientific institutions.
