In order to study the transesterification reaction of castor oil using butanol, several catalysts of alumina-supported MgO and ZnO, and mixtures of them were prepared, having Zn/Mg ratios of 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 5. These catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results were consistent in all the cases with mesoporous solids, with large surface areas, exhibiting the crystalline oxide phase. For the six catalysts tested in the reaction, a selectivity of ca. 100% to fatty acid butyl esters (FABE) was obtained. All FABE yields were above 85%, and the best results were found for the binary mixture of Zn/Mg = 0.25 (almost 100%). The mixtures possess the basic properties of MgO, and simultaneously the amphoteric properties of ZnO, which allow both the triglycerides and the free fatty acids of the oil to being converted to esters.
