Nothofagus pumilio woods are the main forest resource in South Patagonia. They have few species and are susceptible to human alterations. These woods are spatially heterogeneous, with associated environments (AA) to timber forests (BP), and usually they are not harvest.
Silvicultural management effects and diversity relationships between BP and AA were studied, analyzing forest structure, understory, insects, birds and guanacos. The main impact on BP is the homogenization of the forest structure. It is low over generalist species (plants, birds and herbivores), also found in AA; but it is high over specialist insects in microenvironment of BP.
This group show exclusive species in all the associated and productive environments. It is possible the landscape conservation through the combination of different management alternatives, which favor the space heterogeneity and the environment preservation. Each one of these environments is home of unique diversity and give refuge to species, which are a colonization source of the impacted stands.
