Patagonia has been a shelter to Welsh cultural identity and heritage for the last 152 years. On July 28th,1865, around 150 Welsh subjects disembarked in present-day Puerto Madryn escaping the English oppression and chasing a dream: to settle down in a remote place where they could preserve their own language and heritage. They built a friendly relationship with the Tehuelche native people, and manage to overcome a hostile environment. This is symbolically represented in one of the several Welsh festivities that take place in the Province of Chubut: the Festivity of the Landing. The aim of the present research work is to analyze the development of this festivity, its historical accuracy, and its projection on tourism. The historical events are compared to the actual event recreation; and the concepts: identity, heritage and authenticity, are introduced into the discussion. This research features interviews to key informants, as well as personal observation, focusing on the contribution made by different actors from the public and private sectors in the festivity organization, and the involvement of the local community. In conclusion, the Festivity of the Landing has great potential for tourism development, something which remains largely unnoticed by local public and private institutions.
