Sudden phase anomaly (SPA) events have been analysed in Part I utilizing the electron density profile deduced by Radicella-and Restbergs. They have shown that the distribution of atomic oxygen concentration is the parameter Which controls both the electron density and the height of the night time D region level. Experimental results given by Dickinson et al., which show a tight correlation between the measured electron, density profiles .and that of the atomic oxygen, have been taken into account. The aeronomtcal interpretation of the results obtained in Part I is discussed; the explanation of the observed SPA are atributed to variations in atomic oxygen concentration due to large vertical displacements in the equatorial region.
